To be surprised by the difference in take home pay between 38k and 48k?

Recently I have looked into reducing my work hours by 0.2 FTE. This would knock £10k off my salary, but only £400ish off my take home pay per month.
This money would be saved through childcare costs anyway so I’d be no worse off for at least 5 more years.

I do 0.8FTE, the day off in the week means more to me than the small amount of difference it would make to my pay (£36k Vs £31k but about £300 a month due to student loan, pension, tax and NI). DH works away in the week (and 50-60 hours) so l use the time to run errands and do housework so we don't have to do so much at the weekend.
Overtime is much less appealing when you're only getting 50% of it!

I’ve found this, I’m going the other way, up from £38 to £45 and am thinking as it’s a little more travel cost, why have I bothered!

Mine went from £41k to £48k (due to a wage rise) and I get about £260/month extra.

Exactly.

Quite frustrating that Scottish people need to state that; like English is somehow the default.

Given that you live in the UK, with a population of around 67m, and Scotland makes up around 8% of that population (or around 10% vs just England at 83%), it's entirely reasonable for English/England to be the default when you're probably talking to mainly English people. If you want to avoid this sort of confusion, then perhaps stating relevant facts upfront might help.

This is the internet; not England. Statistically I’m far more likely to be Indian than English; therefore I suggest that all English posters introduce each post with “I’m English” for avoidance of doubt.

Thank you.

Given that we're on a UK-based international forum, and unless the post is on one of the international pages, I would guess most users are assumed to be in England by default, unless otherwise stated. Being Indian is irrelevant unless the poster is Indian and in India; similarly being English is irrelevant if you are in another location - it's the location which is relevant for tax (and many other) purposes.

But thanks for the unnecessary pedantry, which only serves to prove the initial point, I feel.

How very England-centric of you 😂

Except I didn’t ask for advice about tax did I? The information was clearly correct for where I lived - be that Scotland, England, India, or anywhere else.

Are you suggesting I need to mention being Scottish on each post? Do I need to state I’m female too? Should I add my age? Marital status? Occupation? Where I am on my menstrual cycle? Where do we stop?

Could you please edit your post to state where you come from? I wouldn’t want to confuse anyone.

Ooops of course.

Humblest apologies.

Your post title was "AIBU To be surprised by the difference in take home pay between 38k and 48k?" and the first posters advised that it looked like you had miscalculated your tax. Perhaps post in general chat, or financial, if you don't want people thinking you're miscalculating your tax, and trying to help you get even more money back. AIBU invites comments, on a discussion forum.

YABU for assuming that everyone would know you were referring to the Scottish wages/tax system. YANBU for being surprised that under the Scottish tax system the difference in pay is different to under any other tax regime.

It’s not my fault the first posters completely misread the question is it? Did I ask for help getting money back? Did I ask for advice?

No. I asked if it was unreasonable to be surprised that the difference was so small. It’s not my fault that people assumed incorrectly that I was incorrect. Do you think I’d be dumb enough not to do a simple tax calculation; or to be dumb enough to ask for financial advice on a discussion forum? Again; that’s on the reader who lacks comprehension; not me.

0rangeCrush, neither orange or crushed, understands tax better than others understand the English language.
