How long after having a baby did you get your hair done?

Sounds like a weird question lol but I plan to get my roots done a few weeks after my baby is born. I’m platinum blonde to the root so don’t want to stretch it too long. I normally go in every (preferably) 4 to 6 weeks. I’ll be booking my first post baby appointment for middle of April to give me at least a couple of weeks after my baby is born and I plan to have my last pregnancy root touch up early March. I know it sounds a bit vain to be thinking of getting my hair done when I’ve had just given birth but I’ll not feel like myself with all the changes and I think it’s good to go for a bit of a boost. My hairdresser won’t mind if I have to take my baby but my husband will probably look after him.

how long did it take for you to get your hair done? Especially if you have a similar hair colour to me or a high maintenance colour because of some reason. Did you leave your baby with your husband or family member/friend or did you take your baby with you? If so how did they behave?

I know some people will say “why don’t you go for balayage or low maintainence colour?” But I’m pale with plain features so I need a bright or light colour to perk me up.

You can have it done immediately

ChChChCheckinItOut · 27/01/2024 15:32

I’m a hairdresser. I think the earliest I’ve had was someone with a 3-week-old. She’d left him with his dad but she was still quite anxious to be finished! Ended up letting her go without drying her hair as she was clearly stressed! But I think useless hubby was texting the whole time with problems 🙄

DocOck · 27/01/2024 15:33

I can't really remember but I would have had it done same week if I wanted. Id just have left the baby with my DH or MIL.

12345FishFish · 27/01/2024 15:34

About 8 weeks but would've had it done much sooner if I wasnt breastfeeding / baby took a bottle. Baby stayed at home with husband when I went.

No need to justify asking this - your hair is important to you and it is perfectly fine to want to retain this part of your identity postpartum. A break to the hairdresser will be good for you. All the best with the rest of your pregnancy x

AcridAndStanLee · 27/01/2024 15:41

I used a home hairdresser when my baby was first born. They were useless as they weren't my usual hairdresser but It meant I could hold my baby as it was being done and baby wasn't a pain at all. However, she did get a splash of bleach on her (some vicious painting of roots going on obviously) so I would recommend either mostly having them in the pram or leaving them at home. Otherwise, no reason to wait. Just make sure you're able to move about etc and comfortable - 3-4 weeks.

Thanks for your replies. It’s good I can have it done as soon as I want. For those who did go get their hair done during the newborn stage what time did you find worked best? I’ll be combo feeding so if I’m leaving my baby with my husband or someone else I trust then I’ll either leave a bottle of formula or expressed milk for my baby so he’s not hungry when I’m away.

I booked for 8 weeks after my due date but ended up cancelling because I was stressed about being away from my baby! Ended up getting it done for the first time when baby was 7 months. Felt amazing, wish I had gone for it sooner!

NewbieToThis · 27/01/2024 15:44

I’ve heard home hairdressers are handy for those stages but like you said it’s hard to know how they’ll be and how good they’ll do your hair. I’ve been going to my hairdresser on and off for 5 years and I trust her 100% so if I had to bring baby I’d bring him in his pram

I was platinum blonde when my daughter was born, had my roots done i think 3 weeks after she was born, my husband loved that time with her

Superscientist · 27/01/2024 15:45

I had a velcro baby who spent 23h a day in my arms! Making a cup of tea meant putting her down and picking her up 6 times as she couldn't be out of my arms for more than a few seconds.
I had severe pnd and washed and brushed my hair every 2-3 weeks when prompted by my partner.
This is far from a typical situation but you don't know what is possible until you find out what kind of baby yours will be. I haven't been to the hairdresser's in about 10 years but my daughter was 10 months before she could be left with dad for an hour!

Bkjahshue · 27/01/2024 15:51

I went when mine was 4 weeks; it was a hairdresser who did hair at home and she was quite happy for me to hold and feed my baby during the appointment and I think enjoyed a cuddle herself too

Aquamarine1029 · 27/01/2024 15:54

My daughter's baby is one month old, and two days ago she was able to get her hair done. A trim and some face framing highlights. The baby stayed with her husband. She is breastfeeding and bottle feeding with expressed milk, so her husband had no problem having the baby alone for a few hours.

Getting out and getting "spruced up" did my daughter a world of good.

Iwant2beJessicaFletcher · 27/01/2024 16:29

I had gel toes when DC3 was 4 weeks old & I held him & he slept through it all!

I had my last colour & cut 6 days before DC3 arrived & went 8 weeks later as I have appointments every 2 months. DC would have been 7 weeks old. I left him with DH & was gone about 4 hours (salon is a 30 minute drive). DC was fine & I loved my hair being done. DC was bottled fed though which probably made it easier.

wishuponastar1988 · 27/01/2024 16:38

My baby was about 7 weeks old when I had my hair done. I left her with her dad, she was abit unsettled as she was EBF and basically attached to me all the time but she was fine. She had some milk from a bottle. I was very anxious though and the salon told me I could bring her with me if I wanted to as I went mid week and when it was quiet. I remember him ringing me as I was on my way home saying 'I've walked around the park 4 times and even the dog wants to go home but whenever I stop pushing the pram she starts crying' GrinGrin

Alwaystired2023 · 27/01/2024 16:40

You're not vain OP! It's a perfectly reasonable question x

I had my hair done maybe 2 months after baby born? But the hairdresser came to my house which was helpful as baby was very much on my boob non stop for the first year

Gillyyy · 27/01/2024 16:50

I think I went when my baby was 10 weeks old, and left him with my mum. He was absolutely fine and I did combination feeding so I left bottles and formula/expressed milk and took my breast pump with me in case I felt like I needed to express. When I had my foils in I asked if they had a room I could use to express in and that was absolutely fine.

I would ring and check if you’re thinking of taking your baby, I don’t know if all salons will allow this. Also, it might be nice for you to have a little bit of time to yourself.

VisionsOfSplendour · 27/01/2024 17:03

Too long ago to remember but I would have just kept up with my usual appointments, new mums can go out and about as soon as they feel able to, no need to lock yourself away if you're fine

But, I'm sure you know this, there's no way to predict how your baby is going to be so don't assume your experience will be the same as anyone else's, wait and see once you've given birth

thefallen · 27/01/2024 17:06

Have it done whenever you like. Don't martyr yourself and give up your whole identity. If having good hair matters to you now, it should matter to you when you've given birth. You're still you

zaxxon · 27/01/2024 17:10

I booked an appointment for about 8 weeks after DC was born - my hair was awful. Had to take her in the pram since DP was at work and couldn't look after her. What with the nappies, sleep suit etc, I ended up setting off so late that they called me when I was 10 minutes away to say they'd had to cancel my appointment. I burst into tears on the bus, very humiliating. Wish I'd never bothered in the first place.

Westfacing · 27/01/2024 17:14

Aw, this takes me back!

In 1981 when DS2 was born in Queen Charlotte's, west London, I had a wash and blow-dry at the in-house hairdressers, around Day 3 (we stayed in for 6 days, back in the day!)Smile

Mariposistaaa · 27/01/2024 17:22

Not hair but nails! 4 days 🤣🤣 baby happy with Dad and granny at home.

Marblessolveeverything · 27/01/2024 17:26

I think it was about two weeks,. I didn't bring baby as didn't want them breathing in the fumes, not sure a lot of hairdressers will let babies in. I left junior in the coffee/bookshop around the corner. Enjoy

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/01/2024 17:42

This has made me laugh. I planned to get a haircut and colour refresh when DD1 was about four months old.

By the end of week 2, I was fantasising about a shower long enough to get shampoo in my hair without him walking in with a screaming baby, declaring 'She wants you' and I finally got everything done when she was about 4 and a half, as her father suddenly turned into an attachment parenting freak by the time we left hospital and fripperies such as hair and, even worse, makeup, jewellery or nails were suddenly me being unloving of my baby (yes, I kicked him into touch fairly quickly, but there was no childcare from him or his mother as punishment for my vanity).

Go within the first fortnight-21 days, leave an extra two bottles, six nappies and switch your phone off for an hour. Start as you mean to go on.

Hummusanddipdip · 27/01/2024 22:34

With my first I think it was 2 weeks? But my hairdresser was mobile. Like you I was platinum blonde, so needed upkeep.
I'm currently 3 weeks with number 2 and haven't considered a haircut yet, but I colour it myself now, I did it when he was a week old. I'm a dark red, so much easier to do myself, I wouldn't lighten it though, I'd always see a professional.

Pepperlypue · 27/01/2024 22:45

My hair is black and I’m naturally very blonde so I hate having grown out roots. I went when DD was 5 weeks or so, and took her with me. She slept the whole appt.
im also taking her next week when she’ll be 11 weeks old, if she doesn’t sleep the whole time they have a separate ‘chill’ area with sofas hidden away so I can sit there with her and breastfeed if she needs it.
