To this this "business" will only end in tears?

There's a pair of boys advertising a car washing business in my town. They're 12 & 13, have no insurance (of any type!) and are being driven to people's houses to wash cars. They're charging roughly the same price as proper valeting businesses.

Aibu to think that if something goes wrong then it's all going to end in tears?

It wouldn't take much to identify these kids from your photos... That's not ok

EmptyTheFrickingBins · 26/01/2024 21:22

It's posted openly on Facebook.

That's a lot of money for two kids to wash the car! YANBU.

Avacadoandtoast · 26/01/2024 21:23

Sounds like you’re jealous - let them be them, unless it’s one of your kids, then give them some guidance. If not, none of your business.

Ecstaticmotion · 26/01/2024 21:24

This sounds very strange. They’re being driven to people’s houses by whom? Is that person taking the money or most of it, or are they keeping it all? If the former this is potentially trafficking. If the latter I guess it’s pocket money and I hope they have good guidance on what to do and how to stay safe.

SilverSideUp · 26/01/2024 21:25

Honestly we should be applauding them at that age to get out and earn some pennies. How is it affecting you?!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 26/01/2024 21:27

They’d better hope they don’t scratch a pricey car. They/their parents will soon regret the lack of insurance.

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 26/01/2024 21:27

Good for them getting out there and making some cash.

I'd imagine a parent and not necessarily leap to human trafficking!

Why would it end in tears?

jhpf · 26/01/2024 21:29

@Ecstaticmotion agree.

I have zero issue with this unless they are being trafficked.

If it's two kids wanting to make some money it's MY choice whether I give them a shot and MY choice to pay it.

I would not even consider them having insurance and if it was a worry I would just say no thanks.

We often have this type of thing as a local clubs or groups fundraiser. Albeit we take the car there. It's washed by a load of kids.

RagzRebooted · 26/01/2024 21:30

My son and his mate next door did this a couple of years ago at 13/14, put an ad on our local village Facebook and charged a fiver. They had a profitable few weeks then got bored of it.
We didn't drive them around though, they had to walk!

If they don't have the right insurance and they damage a car then it could be very costly. They also do have a responsibility to register as self employed if their gross income amounts to over £1k in a tax year.

There may be other issues as well.

User4653566 · 26/01/2024 21:34

They can hardly do any damage by washing the exterior with soap and water. I'd definitely let them do my car! Wish they lived near me 😂

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 26/01/2024 21:34

If people will pay that then its their choice.
The driving around is fine if its parents happy to help (but I too thought this had the potential for them being used)
The insurance... ye they should

Really though, if people want to risk a 13/14 year washing their car for that price its their choice

nandinos · 26/01/2024 21:36

Well if people are stupid enough to pay these kids the same price as professional valets it's their lookout.
They can't claim anything, the kids are not a proper 'business' so what are they going to do about it.

Drop the sponge on the floor and it gets stones in it which scratch the car for a start

You'd be surprised at the damage a dropped sponge can do to paintwork, when it's picked up gravel, small stones, etc.!

ACourseInstead · 26/01/2024 21:40

Very enterprising. Honestly, amazed anyone would object to this.

You absolutely can damage the paint if you don't wash it correctly or use stuff in the wrong concentration.

I would pay local kids to wash my car.

I would not pay them the same amount as professionals.

Nutellaonall · 26/01/2024 21:47

DH had a profitable little car washing business when he was that age. He now has his own successful consulting business. It’s good for them. Good on them.

TeaKitten · 26/01/2024 21:50

Teenagers washing cars isn’t exactly a new or dangerous venture.

TeaKitten · 26/01/2024 21:51

How exactly do you no they have no insurance of any type anyway? They’ve obviously had help…

ExtraOnions · 26/01/2024 22:10

We had a couple if similar aged lads doing this round here in the summer … there was a some pearl clutching on Facebook, but no harm came of it. People booking knew they were getting two teenagers doing it.

Because one of the parents has said so on the Facebook post.
