Decided to get adult orthodontic braces. Will people laugh

I am 42 and decided to get adult braces. They recommend the train track brackets stuck on my teeth. I want the treatment done but it will take 2 years or more.

i am worried I will be laughed at and feel super self conscious. Anyone else done it and it’s been ok? Does it affect your speech and eating?

Can you not do Invisalign? I wouldn’t have done train tracks myself I don’t think, but I know lots of people have.

AnEmbarrasmentofWitches · 26/01/2024 13:58

It is so common these days to see adults with braces, completely normal. People will absolutely not laugh at you. I had them when younger - the first week or so and first few days after each time they are tightened can be a bit sore, but SO worth it in the end.

congratulations and enjoy your beautiful new teeth 😁

PerfectTravelTote · 26/01/2024 13:58

No one will laugh. Adult braces are in no way unusual these days. It will all be worth it in the end!

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 26/01/2024 13:59

No one will laugh. People don't really notice this stuff

Catza · 26/01/2024 13:59

Had train tracks in my late 30s. Never felt self-conscious and most people didn't even notice I was wearing them.
In what kind of world do you live where you think adults will be laughing in your face over something like that? I honestly can't imagine any of my friends or colleagues ever doing such a thing.

shockeditellyou · 26/01/2024 14:01

Loads of adults here with proper train track braces. No one bats an eyelid.

speedtalker · 26/01/2024 14:02

From my experience from doing it in my 30s is that people do notice, and immediately start pointing out their own dental imperfections and how much they want to have a brace.
And it’s so worth it. A real investment in yourself.

TheWorldKickedBack · 26/01/2024 14:07

I did it when I turned 40. Got the white train track ones. Most people didn't really notice. I was speaking to one of my colleagues and told her I had them, turns out she also had braces on too! I had no idea until she showed me. No regrets!

JKDcot · 26/01/2024 14:08

Thank you all! I want the end result and do agree it’s worth the investment in money and time.

I can’t do Invisalign due to the fact I have an over bite.

I work from home but in video calls all day long with lots of people so was worried it would be very noticeable and people would laugh behind my back!

To be honest I'd be more inclined to (privately , to myself) be impressed with your bravery

Guitarbasher · 26/01/2024 14:10

Who cares? You will have beautiful and healthy teeth after. I know that for many issues Invisaline won't be able to move the teeth.

WavingCatsandDogs · 26/01/2024 14:15

I have train tracks. I love them because I know I'm fixing my very wonky teeth.

I smile now more than I ever did, even with them on!

WavingCatsandDogs · 26/01/2024 14:16

If people laugh it says everything about them and nothing about you.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 26/01/2024 14:16

Invisalign can treat overbites, have you had a consultation elsewhere? Often you'll be given the option of train tracks only when the person you've seen isn't confident doing anything more than simple Invisalign cases.

If you Google image search Invisalign before and after you'll see some good examples.

All that being said, no one will laugh at you for train tracks.

I've had both and train tracks are more uncomfortable by far. You have to have them tightened every few weeks which makes your teeth hurt for a couple of days after meaning you can only eat soft foods (biting into an apple or even crisps was horrible). If one of the wires comes loose from the brackets it digs into your cheek until you can see the Ortho to get it sorted, not to mention the general ulcers that are common when you first get the braces.

bluebunny1 · 26/01/2024 14:17

I see adults with braces often. I am 41 and currently wearing Invisalign — no one notices or cares.

CatamaranViper · 26/01/2024 14:18

Nope. There is a lady in my office who has braces. She is around your age OP.

She chats about them or references them very matter of fact. She'll ask if there is anything stuck in them after lunch if she has a meeting or mentions when she's going to the dentist for them. She's often spoken about how her teeth were before or point at celebs and say that's what she's aiming for (you get the jist).

Just own it and don't try too hard to hide them.

I starter invisalign this week. I'm also in my 40s.

I have an overbite too and the orthodontist said its fine for me to do invisalign for the most part, however they may put train tracks on for the last couple of months if my overbite hasn't corrected from invisalign. Is that an option?

Invisalign came out at the same price as train tracks due to an offer.

JKDcot · 26/01/2024 14:23

Thank you all. Let me ask again about Invisalign. I’ve only seen 1 dentist for a quote and he just said train tracks straight away!

I had them at your age - no issue at all and I was on videocalls all the time at work. Youll need to eat soft food and soup for the first few days, but it worked really really well and I'm proud of my smile now! 😁

JKDcot · 26/01/2024 14:32

One other worry! I have had quite bad gum
disease and some bone loss. Did anyone feel teeth were loose and thought they might lose a teeth during the process?

the dentist has of course seen x rays and I am seeing a hygienist during the process. But I’ve had to sign a standard form which lists this as a risk

Can you not have the clear/whitish composite brackets instead of metal? Both of my children had them and they were almost unnoticeable unless you were close up to them. In photos of them you couldn't see their braces at all.

TabbyM · 26/01/2024 14:33

No I had them at work and someone else did, absolutely no problem.

VoleChomper · 26/01/2024 14:35

I'm around the same age and I'm getting braces this year. In my mind I've been thinking of Invisalign but if train tracks sound like they'd be more effective and/or quicker I'd have no problem opting for them. I would go for white train tracks though. Definitely not the steel.

They might notice, but they will not laugh. If they mention it, it will be from interest, probably in doing it themselves.

lolawasashowgirl · 26/01/2024 14:36

Oh god go for it! I did at the age of 49 and nobody even noticed! Mine were train tracks. I think unless your orthodontist advises that Invisalign are more clinically appropriate for you then why pay the extra money? The other interesting thing is I was always so self conscious of my teeth and then as soon as the braces were on I felt less self conscious because I was doing something about them! Best thing I ever did!
