Electrophysiology for eyes- so worried

Shameless posting in AIBU as going out of my mind with worry. Long story short, I went for a routine eye test in September. No real issues except struggling with glare when driving. The optician noticed I had thin/pale optic nerves (both eyes) and a slight visual field defect (one eye) Although my eye pressure was ok, he referred me to a gluacoma consultant who saw me and said it wasn't gluacoma but possibly damage from a head injury or toxins (alcohol/medication). Neither applicable to me. He referred me to electrophysiology and I am absolutely terrified. Not of the test, but the results and the possibility of losing my sight. I'm a wreck and really struggling to enjoy life at the minute. MRI was done to rule out MS/tumours etc. Can anyone who has been referred for similar tests please give some reassurance? I'm going to speak to my GP about something for the anxiety but in the interim I could really do with a handhold

Here to offer a handhold.

I don't know anything about your situation, but I do know the fear of losing your eyesight. I'm very shortsighted, and all my adult life, at every optician's appointment, I have been warned about the signs of retinal detachment. Then one day it happened: the flashes and visual disturbances. I thought "This is it. This is the start of losing my vision." Yes, it is terrifying. In the end it was all right. I did not lose my sight. But I remember sitting on the hospital steps waiting for dh to collect me after getting the good news, and crying with relief.

Hope you have good news, too.

Sorry you're so anxious.

I have no experience of this, but just wondering if night blindness was mentioned? I get this a little bit. Does this test check brain to eye stimulus? Sorry if that's completely wrong.

Thank you both for your messages. Oh gosh @Aparecium that sounds terrifying. I'm so glad everything was OK in the end for you. Night blindness wasn't mentioned @Itiswhysofew but my vision is pretty rubbish at night. Yep that's the test that checks brain to eye stimulus. Have you had it done?

I've had this done twice. And no answer at all. Now waiting to see another specialist.

HearHoovesThinkUnicorns24 · 26/01/2024 19:29

Sorry to hear that you're no further forward @TigerRag, I'm sure that must be so frustrating (and worrisome). How is your vision on a day to day basis?

I'm registered partially sighted. But apart from the poor colour vision it's not that bad.

HearHoovesThinkUnicorns24 · 27/01/2024 09:25

That's good you're not too badly affected @TigerRag. What age were you when your issues started? Is it possible they are congenital?
