To think night driving is getting more dangerous

Since a few years ago - and now that cyclists/pedestrians have more right of way. I agree and think it works well during the day.

However at night? Headlights seem to be more blinding than ever. Spotting a dimly lit cyclist in front of a full dazzling tank of a car is hard.

In addition, many pedestrians seem to have a cavalier ‘my right of way, I’ll step out’ attitude. I was driving along a 40mph stretch this evening and - 3 times - a dark figure suddenly appeared, stepped out onto the road and I needed to break quite abruptly.

@Princessfluffy It's mentioned near the bottom of the RAC article upthread.

MoltenLasagne · 25/01/2024 21:21

We had a courtesy car recently with the new headlights and I was amazed at how shit they are compared to our normal old-style headlights. It's as though they emblazon the couple of metres directly in front of the car, but everything outside of that range is in pitch black so it's impossible to see any of the usual hazards. I was very glad to go back to my old banger!

Zanatdy · 25/01/2024 21:22

I really hate driving at night so try and avoid it as much as possible. Especially very late at night, since I know of so many drink drive incidents that clearly go on all the time and the people don’t get caught (generally a friends daughter and her partner who are awful and always breaking the law in one way or other).

If you’re aware your lights are too bright then could they be swapped at next change for non led ones?

Agree newer headlights are far too bright. Painfully so.

Add in different driver heights and there’s a problem. Driving on motorways in the dark is challenging.

Is that reply to me?

If so, then no, my car's lights can't be swapped for non led ones. It's a new BMW SUV and has laser headlights that are specific to the model of car.

Sorry! (And yes I do indicate)

TheGoogleMum · 25/01/2024 21:24

Overhead lights being switched off for large parts of the motorway annoys me. Even with lots of cars it's easier to see with them on

JudgeJ · 25/01/2024 21:11

If you're stupid enough to step out in front of a moving vehicle then you're not walking safely and represent as big a problem as a speeding car, yet I wonder who would get the blame for crass idiocy?

Never attempt this at night. But the driver who is ignoring road markings, signs and pedestrians. If drivers aren’t paying attention to basic things like this then they aren’t safe to be driving and it’s stupid to blame a pedestrian for using crossings designed for said use.

Rummikub · 25/01/2024 21:32

@Willowswood yes sorry

i do think manufacturers should take into account the impact on coming Road users so it’s safer for everyone.

Even read works lights are ridiculously bright and pointing directly at on coming traffic.

And don’t get me started on the appropriately named Bright Circle roundabout where the massive led advertising screen dazzles drivers in a bad way.

it all should be looked at in a holistic way.

You're the one driving a machine that can kill, just drive slower

So obviously you don't drive then...

On the effectiveness of using yellow tinted glasses at night
are-night-driving-glasses-safe-to-wear-a20Q17g8xnyD

I use prescription night driving glasses which are untinted but with an anti-glare coating. They are much more effective that the cheap yellow ones I bought on amazon, which just dim everything. They were binned.

Are night driving glasses safe to wear? - Which? News

Glasses with yellow lenses are touted as helping to reduce dazzle from headlights at night, but experts say they aren't a good idea

Orangeandgold · 25/01/2024 21:37

I agree. Super fast cars overtaking dangerously. Pedestrians stepping out and usually wearing very dark clothing! People don’t realise how much harder it is to see someone in dark clothes at night.

soupfiend · 25/01/2024 21:38

Ive got anti glare on my glasses. Havent found that its any different to when Im just wearing my contacts

Its the fact that when a light is shining in your eyes, you cannot see anything else in front of you,e verything else is black, why do you think that it used to be used in interrogation. Im not sure any glass coverings would deal with that

Darwinism at its finest.

I get you want to make a point, but when you might get really hurt doing so, it isn't the best idea.

Singlespies · 25/01/2024 21:39

Cars have such bright lights now, including mine, that I no longer drive at night. Being constantly dazzled is exhausting and I don't want to kill someone.

AlongCameMoi · 25/01/2024 21:40

Yes - headlights are too bright. For a while I felt like people were forgetting to turn off their full beams!

Also the street lamps are being switched off too to save money I imagine Hmm

I've noticed people speeding has become much much worse both in the day and at night. Night is worse though because I regularly have people cross I'm doing 30 in a 30 and at night they speed round you doing 50. No police or cameras about.

Walking2024now24days · 25/01/2024 21:41

grumpypedestrian · 25/01/2024 20:54

I have to admit that as a pedestrian I do step out in front of cars on purpose, but that’s only at pedestrian crossings where I’m clearly waiting to cross and it’s obvious a driver wasn’t going to stop.

If a driver ignores pedestrian crossings then they aren’t driving safely.

I value being alive over being in the rught

Topofthemountain · 25/01/2024 21:43

Willowswood · 25/01/2024 20:50

I have a big SUV that has very bright LED headlights. I agree they are dazzling and too bright. I've noticed recently that some cars flash me, I'm wondering if they think I'm on full beam, so I have no choice but to do a quick flash back, so they can see I'm not on full beam.

I can imagine this surprises them.

I checked my lights and there aren't any bulbs gone, so no other reason for flashing.

I didn't design the lights, or put the led bulbs in them, it's just the car I like to drive 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is giving a quick flash back a good idea?

Borgonzola · 25/01/2024 21:46

That RAC article quoted a high number of road users saying they found the lights too bright, but surely some of those answering have very bright lights themselves?

Agree that the issue of taller cars makes it worse for those of us in normal cars. And yes, for the poster who finds those of us in smaller cars hilarious, I drive a Corsa, because I can't afford anything else and even if I could, I care about the issue of car bloat (Google it) and what it does to our roads and the environment

gano · 25/01/2024 21:47

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 25/01/2024 20:21

I often mutter to the DC about ninja cyclists in their dark clothes, on a dark bike, without any lights swerving across the dimly lit road.

As an aside, the RAC is trying to get the government to look into the problem of dazzling headlights.

https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/rac-calls-for-government-action-on-headlight-glare/

There is even a petition (that no one has seen).

Here's a link to the petition

Caerulea · 25/01/2024 21:47

Live very rurally so no streetlights or even cat's eyes on very narrow roads flanked by 'Cornish hedges' (stone walls hidden inside greenery) - modern headlights are pure hell, and that 'auto' setting doesn't kick in quick enough so you get a split second of painful blinding lights. I've had to come to a total stop a few times cos you just can't see anything at all!

Wrongsideofpennines · 25/01/2024 21:48

Round me I think its the fact that the streetlights don't emit as much light either. So the pedestrians dressed all in black step off the pavement and can't ve seen at all because they have stepped out of the tiny focused spot of light from the streetlamps. Before they switched to LED the street lighting would have shown them up even off the pavement, now pedestrians have to be directly beneath them to be seen.

Avoid going out af night !

Bargello · 25/01/2024 20:12

Around Glasgow it's definitely more dangerous. Deliveroo/JustEat drivers on jailbroken electric mopeds, no licence, no insurance, no lights, no helmet, dressed entirely in black. On and off the pavement, in and out of traffic. Total menace.

Those bikes are a liability. Are they insured

I hate driving at night too and headlights are so bright

Allfur · 25/01/2024 21:54

Walking2024, I'm a very good driver but I don't go around victim blaming more vulnerable road users

Comedycook · 25/01/2024 21:54

The other day at night I saw a guy on an e scooter on the road, dressed in black, nothing reflective on, no lights. Unbelievable.

Also I've noticed so many delivery bikes ...they are always in a rush and taking risks.
