To go to Birmingham with 9 month old DD?

DS' birthday is in May and the plan was to go to Drayton Manor and Cadbury World. I've found a lovely little place to stay and was all ready to book until the news about the measles outbreaks. DD will be 9 months in May and not old enough to have had the MMR yet. Now I can't decide whether it would be stupid to take her down there, or if there's just as much risk of her catching it anywhere.
Would need to book it pretty soon to get a decent place to stay, so can't really wait until closer to the time to see how things pan out.

Hopeful bump? Suppose it's less of an AIBU and more of a WWYD?

No advice but following with interest. We're heading to Birmingham (airport) in May for our holidays. DS1 will ge approaching 5y/o and DS2 just turned 1. Now I'm wondering if I should be worried, too?! 😬

Popcorn23 · 25/01/2024 21:10

May is a long way away, but if it is was me, I would be cautious and find an alternative place to go if I could.

Even though the chances of DD picking up something are very slim, I would be worrying about it which would ruin the trip!

Unless you live on a remote island, or in a sterile bubble, you can't avoid social contact, and that means you can't avoid infectious diseases. I presume you go to shops and the park at home? You could meet all sorts of bugs there. I don't think there's anything particularly "exotic" about Birmingham!

MMR is given at a year old because measles antibodies from Mum can last that long in a newborn. If you have good immunity to measles, then your LO should also have ongoing immunity, hopefully up to and past May.

I live near Birmingham and regularly go into the city with the children.

I think you'll be ok.

Drayton Manor is outdoors and in Tamworth, Staffordshire. It’s buffered from the most affected areas on the east side of the city. Cadbury World is in Bourneville and indoors so a much higher risk. Stats as of Monday were 216 confirmed and 103 probable cases. This in a population of 863,000. Contact your GP and speak to a GP or nurse about the possible risks for your family so you can make an informed choice for your family.

TBH my DH who has NOT developed immunity to measles even after having it twice being critically ill from it and having MMR. [hence my following the news on this one very closely] He is not venturing into and has temporarily stepped back from covering hospital chaplains for the time being. BCH is currently struggling with 50+ measles cases needing hospital care amongst children in the city. My hunch is most in hospital will be unvaccinated or immunsurpressed in some way.

Good point about the inside vs outside. It's mainly Thomas Land we're going for so could skip CW. But then we'll need to go out for food and things whilst we're there...
Ugh I'm just so conflicted 😐

It looks as if 103 people have it and 80% of those are in Brum, so 80 people out of a city of a million people have it. Seems pretty safe to me

PicaK · 26/01/2024 08:18

Well both Cadbury World and DM are a bit pants for kids that age. I'd say 8 for CW and at least walking for DM.
If you're worried about the risk then the draw isn't worth it

I agree Drayton manor isn't great for little kids. Alton towers might be better with CBeebies land .

Cadbury world also a 12 month old wouldn't get anything out of ! Think tank is a lot better, but again for older kids (incase you want to go brum in the future)

34weekmess · 26/01/2024 08:36

Sorry just saw the baby will be 9 months in may and totally missed you have a ds! How old is he ?

Iiquidsnake · 26/01/2024 08:45

Don't bother, not because of measles, but because it's an absolute shithole! The city centre doesn't feel safe anymore and Cadbury World is a waste of time and money. Drayton Manor's ok though if you like that sort of thing, but that's not in Birmingham.

No problem 😊 It's for DS 4th birthday, as he absolutely loves Thomas.

Thomas land will be great for a 4yo, it’s mostly outside with loads of places to park buggies etc (used to live close by so went a lot when DC was little) if you’re worried about food there are a couple of nice pubs/restaurants nearby (fig and olive, Green Man at Middleton) or there’s a McDonalds and a Harvester on Bassett’s Pole island. Went to Cadbury World in the summer and it’s mostly inside and a lot of walking!

34weekmess · 26/01/2024 13:49

@curlymam Ah in that case if he really loves Thomas then why not ! I would give Cadbury world a miss though personally and I'd give think tank ago instead, lots of stuff to look at/mess with. The human body part I even loved myself 😆

34weekmess · 26/01/2024 13:50

I don't disagree bham is a shithole, but the city centre is the same as all of them to be honest , it's the outskirts that are an absolute dump. Apart from the posh areas - so I don't see how it would affect you

Thanks 😊 DH says there's just as much chance of someone with measles travelling to a tourist attraction up here, so we just need to live our lives. DS spent so much of his life in lockdown bless him.
