To think £15 for 10 Tulips is a rip off?

Just went to my local independent florist. Wasn’t sure what I wanted so I said my budget is £25. Florist said you won’t get much for that, so you’re probably best going for some Tulips. I said okay sure.

She wrapped them up in some paper. 10 tulips for £15!

That’s the proper cost of things.

If you want cheap tulips get them from the supermarket or for a bit more, M&S.

The tulip season is only starting, so yes, the price reflects the cost of heated greenhouses and transport from the Netherlands. Lidl sell them cheaper. Daffs are inexpensive, the Cornish ones are starting to come in quantity now.

I buy alstromeria direct from the grower... 5 bunches of 5 stems for £10.

Sounds like a rip off if it was just 10 fairly ordinary tulips with no foliage or arranging. I'd have thought a florist could put together something nicer with maybe fewer flowers and some seasonal local greenery?

I rarely buy cut flowers, I impulse bought a £2:50 bunch of pink roses from my local Sainsbury's last weekend - added them to some greenery from my garden (eucalyptus and Ivy) and they've been really lovely. They're starting to look tired today but a lot of pleasure for the price of a snack.

Buy them or don’t. 🙄

I don't think it's florists that are pricing themselves out.

I think most people are out of touch of what things cost when you don't include the massive bulk quantities of chain supermarkets etc.

Kittycat333 · 25/01/2024 17:11

I wouldn't have paid that! I got a big bunch of tulips from Tesco yesterday for £8.

You can't compare supermarket flower prices to those in a florist. Flowers are a loss leader for supermarkets, they're hoping that you'll buy lots of other things whilst you're there that they do make a profit on.

I'm presuming they've been shipped from Holland so £1.50 a flower probably isn't that bad ...
