To have a shower when the doctor might call?

It's my day off and my DD needs some medication. I was trying to get through to the doctor from 8am. I finally got into a call queue at 8.35am. I spoke to a receptionist at 8.57ish and finished the call at 9am. She said a doctor would phone me between 9 and 12.

I've been waiting but I can't have a shower, can I? I feel yucky. I can't go out.

Is it normal for surgeries to operate like this? I can only get appointments for me and 3 kids on my day off as I'm not allowed my phone at work and I start at 8.30am. The advance appointments are always fully booked so they tell you to call on the day from 8am even if it's not an emergency.

Just have a quick shower and take phone with you Confused

Of course you can shower, just keep your phone nearby and on loud. If it rings, switch the shower off, dry your hands and answer it.

Sometimes I wonder how people make it through the day. Grown adults should not need walked through how to listen for a phone call.

Our surgery follows this. Just take the phone into the bathroom. You’ll be what, 5 mins tops?

Just take the phone in the bathroom, have it on loud and hop out if/when it rings 🤷🏻‍♀️

You know the doctor can‘t see through the phone, right?

even if it is a video call, they are hardly going to bat an eyelid if you have wet hair and a dressing gown on.

TheSnowyOwl · 25/01/2024 10:45

Yes it is normal. If you miss the call, the GP won’t ring back so you need to prioritise which is most important.

Put your phone on the loudest ring setting you have.

And run a bath if you're worried you won't be able to answer from the shower.

Thanks for the constructive help!

If it rings, switch the shower off, dry your hands and answer it

We have a shower enclosure so I hope I can get out of it (door is a bit gammy) and do all that in the very short time before it goes to answerphone. But hey, I could have had the shower by now. I wish they could just give you a 1 or even 2 hr window.

He called! All sorted.

to be fair to PP, given your OP o also assumed that perhaps you weren’t the most logical of people and so giving that advice was appropriate

Do we really have to ask the internet everything?? Just put your phone on loud and bring it into the bathroom with you? Drama solved
