Not to want to go to A&E

So I have severe mental health problems and have had a terrible year with depression and anorexia. Have also had substance misuse issues in the past. The resulting health problems mean I’ve been in A&E for up to 21 hours sitting on a plastic chair.
There is no immediate issue, my mother (I rent from her with all my sick pay and there are problems including there’s a lock on the outside of my room and not the inside, they walk in on me naked all the time without knocking, I could go on and on and on) but she’s basically just fed up with me being catatonically depressed.
I don’t want to go to A&E. I’ll have to sit in a plastic chair for hours before they discharge me and I get shouted at because I haven’t been cured… again. I also offer to get a taxi for all my medical appointments. Every single time.

Are you under secondary MH care? Your living conditions seem horrendous.

Allmarbleslost · 25/01/2024 09:08

Your mum doesn't sound supportive op. Does she use the lock to lock you in?

Tumbledowntumbleweed · 25/01/2024 09:10

You don't mention if you're in crisis or not, so go to your GP or mental health team first. You probably don't need to go to A&E at this time of day.

I’m unclear from your post why you would go to A&E when there is no immediate issue? I’m sorry you are having such a hard time. Do you have any support from professionals?

Firstly I am sorry you are feeling so desperate - you've been amazingly strong to get through the past year and stay away from any drugs/alcohol misuse. You deserve compassion and empathy from your Mum even though I can sympathise that it can be frustrating and difficult living with someone having mental health problems. What support do you have outside of your home? Is there ANY way you can rent somewhere else? Do you feel that would improve your mental health or do you rely on support (no matter how rubbish it can be) from your family by living with them? Can anything be done with the lock and one be put on the inside of your door. You have a right to privacy in your own room.

If you need to go to A and E go asap. Issues like blood sugar are incredibly dangerous with Anorexia Nervosa.

Follow this up with extra support. Are you under CMHT? If you can’t maintain weight you can look into nasogastric tube or hospitalisation or both. The crucial part is beginning to tackle your eating disorder because your brain cannot recover from Depression without that. It’s really tough, but keep going. You need to talk about your living situation with CMHT or a similar service, as it doesn’t sound very safe for you. xxx
