to go to GP for stopped periods

Even though I have the coil? My periods are usually clockwork and have suddenly not had one for two months. I know they can stop when you have the coil put in but it feels awfully sudden.

Did you get a Mirena IUS?

For me, no periods is one of the best things about having a Mirena.

MamaBearsss · 24/01/2024 07:36

Isn’t this normal with the coil?

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 24/01/2024 07:39

How heavy were your periods to start with? I had a coil fitted to deal with unmanageably heavy periods. They were heavier for a couple of months, then lighter (more like a normal period), then they just stopped. If your periods were fairly normal beforehand then just stopping abruptly doesn't sound worrying from my experience. If you go to the GP I expect they'll just tell you that it's the coil.

If it is a mirena it is very common for periods to stop.If it is a copper coil then it is unrelated and might be due to lots of things eg being underweight, perimenopause, hormone imbalance , stress etc and if it persists it would not be unreasonable to see your doctor.

Love having no periods in mirena. Though I still get pmt symptoms.

Koalaslippers · 24/01/2024 08:13

How long has it been in? If under six months I wouldn't be worried. If it's been in over a year and periods suddenly stopped I would talk about to the GP.

Blomdd · 24/01/2024 08:13

It just seemed odd that I had normal periods requiring 2-5 tampons a day and they just stopped randomly after 2 years of having the coil rather than tapering. Fingers crossed it stays this way!

If you’ve had the coil for two years and your periods have only stopped now then yes I would see the GP.

Oh that's very different if it's happened so late after having the coil fitted. Yes I think you should contact your GP.

Blomdd · 24/01/2024 09:12

Sorry it would've helped if I added that to my OP!

Personally, I would think what are the reasons for periods to stop and what can GP do about it before making a decision.
You are either pregnant (home test), menopausal (warrants a GP visit), underweight, under undue stress or it is just part of the course with coils. It is unlikely to indicate any life-threatening disorder so I would be inclined to wait and see (after doing a pregnancy test).

Definitely not pregnant, stress levels normal, early 30s so hopefully not menopause, slightly overweight by a few pounds.
