To think that the amount of noise is unnecessary

This is a recent problem but if there’s anything to actually be done about it I’d like to do it before it becomes an established problem.

For context, I live in a large village. There is a main road running through it but it’s 30mph and although busy twice a day, doesn’t really generate too much noise or bother. For the last three morning at 06:45 somebody has been starting what I can only assume is an extremely high powered motorbike. I’m not exaggerating when I say it sounds like someone is standing outside my window with a chainsaw. They the proceed to rev the motorbike constantly for around 15 minutes. After that they then leave, I’m assuming for work. They rev very loudly as they leave. The only way I can describe the sound is like a formula 1 car passing our house; that very high pitched, ascending whining noise.

From what I can work out, the motorbike owner is quite a few doors down, so it must be even louder for the immediate neighbours. It has only started this week, so I’m not sure if it’s a case of new neighbour or new bike. The noise, when it starts, is so sudden and aggressive that it’s startling me awake and disturbing my very young DS who wakes up literally screaming.

I know 06:45 isn’t the earliest and in the past I would’ve been up myself for some time by then, but, although my DS struggle with going to sleep early, he will sometimes manage to sleep until 8am. Maybe not relevant in terms of the law but relevant to give you an idea of the level of noise.

I only have a passing knowledge on motorbikes, so if anybody on here could enlighten me on two points I would be grateful.

  1. Is there a likely reason the rider is idling and revving their bike for 15 minutes before leaving?
  2. The rider leaves in a very loud fashion but I was under the impression that the sort of bike control that creates those very loud, formula 1 sounding noises, is optional and not necessary for the functioning of the bike. Is this true or am I mistaken?

AIBU if I find out exactly where the noise is coming from and make some sort of complaint/speak to them if it doesn’t put me in any danger? Is there actually anything I can do about it?

I would go down the road checking with neighbours, see if they've noticed it & if they've said anything & what response they've got. Then have a word with the culprit . Sounds like they've got a new toy & want everyone to notice. No need for a shouting match. Just hi noisy neighbour, I live 10 doors down & just wanted to let you know you are waking the whole road up at 6.45am, with the race track revving, could you stop please. I have no clue re law, but has got to be something about noise levels at that time of day. Someone on MN will know.

Biker here. Unless it's an old bike with carbs (carburetor rather than fuel injection ) then no, there is no reason why they are waiting 15min before leaving. Even if it is a carb bike, reving it is simply making it worse as the carbs will be constantly trying to adjust to the revs rather than just the cold temps.
Carb bikes do generally need "warmed up" before riding in cold weather, but this is simply letting them idle for 2/3 min before heading off, not revving it.

Go speak to them would be my advice. If the bike is on a public highway while the noise is going on you can report it. If it's on their driveway its much more of a grey area.

Thanks for the responses. I only just got a notification that I’d had a reply. It doesn’t sound like an old bike; rather a very fancy superbike. I’ll see what happens in the morning and try to locate the owner. At least I know that once it starts I’ve got 15 minutes to throw some proper clothes on and have a little wander before he or she leaves. I would’ve liked to know where I stand legally but hopefully that won’t even come up in the conversation should it happen.

This used to be me. Old bike and very early work start.
Unless you are offering to buy them a car or bus pass, then what do you realistically want to happen?
