Can someone tell me about carpets?

Moved into a new build 4 years ago, we paid £1500 (4bed over 3 floors) for them to carpet the entire house and they are absolutely horrible. In high traffic areas e.g stairs they are so worn already. At the time we had no money left so had no option but to go for these carpets.
We have some money saved and really want to replace the carpets but we have absolutely no idea about carpets and when we went into a carpet store we found the sales person extremely pushy on a certain type and were still non the wiser on what we should get.

Can anyone recommend a carpet ? I want one that is soft under foot and will last longer than 4 years, more like 10+ . I’m expecting to pay a lot more than £1,500 but not sure where to start.

Thanks everyone this is so helpful.
We have tiled flooring throughout the downstairs apart from carpet in the lounge.

Another question, do most people carpet the bedrooms and landings in the same carpet?

we were thinking of getting runners up the stairs like in images attached. Does the carpet stay the same once you hit the landing but obviously lose the trim? And then do you carry it through into the bedrooms so it all matches ?

It’s absolutely personal choice as to what people do with same carpet through bedrooms etc. If budget is an issue I’d get the best possible quality for hall/stairs/living rooms and you can generally get away with something a bit less robust in bedrooms as they just don’t get the same.

Having the same carpet throughout from experience seems to be a relatively recent thing-maybe the last 10/15 years. We had different carpets in different rooms in our old house but have gone for the same throughout, bar a couple of bedrooms in our current house…down to budget, we spent big on the high traffic areas, spare bedrooms, not so much

As others have said, go to a wee independent shop, their displays won’t be so pretty as carpet right etc, but their prices will always be a LOT better

We have bleachable carpets - an absolute godsend. They are absolutely fantastic. Look lovely and easy to clean up after children etc! Have had them for about 3 years so far and they still look brand new.

My parents have a red carpet (it's an older house so it suits the style of their home and doesn't look old fashioned). It looks as good as new and is at least 25 years old.

Well ours are still going strong 20 years later, and they are pale beige! (I've also never had them cleaned!). (Maybe toouch cleaning wears them out?). Anyway, I think they were 80/20, and we went for heavy duty underlay. No shoes house, and survived two DC's and a few cats.

We are actually just thinking of changing the lounge to wood (we have wood in the hall and kitchen), but like the extra insulation that carpet gives. We'll see.
