Pouring fat down the drain

Fatbergwhat · 23/01/2024 17:40

Is it stupid to pour fat from cooking or say a wax melt melted down with water down the drain? I just came across my partner of 20 years doing this with a wax melt he was cleaning out of the burner. I think it's absolutely mad and he's an idiot. He thinks it's fine.

What do others think?

Yes, it’s stupid.

Chemenger · 23/01/2024 17:41

He is an idiot, but maybe he has shares in Dynorod?

Well I hope so because we're gonna need them if he continues!

He's normally really sensible and does more than me in the house so I'm baffled.

My DH did this with wax and ended up clogging our drain so bad we needed to bring in a plumber. I was so mad at him because I did not know he was doing this

SaladDays2024 · 23/01/2024 17:44

Oils that solidify shouldn't be binned.
Olive oil, sunflower oil, fine to pour down once cooled. Wax melts solidify and block drains, ditto oils like ghee, bacon fat or coconut oil. They should be cooled and then binned.

RandomButtons · 23/01/2024 17:44

He’s an idiot.

Suggest he invests in a drain clearing g kit. Not that it’ll help the fatburg building up down your street.

OneTC · 23/01/2024 17:44

Yeah it's stupid

Midnlghtrain · 23/01/2024 17:44

What a numpty! Hope he's the one paying for the plumber?!

SinnerBoy · 23/01/2024 17:45

Wax? He's a blithering imbecile! When I wash the frying pan, I pour the oil into the bin (liner) and wipe as much as I can off with kitchen roll. Even oil will block a drain, if tipped down constantly.

Bitter experience...

Yes exactly I thought this was just common sense!

He's probably flushing wipes and cotton buds if this is his type of thinking.

SinnerBoy · 23/01/2024 17:46

Even oils have sticky components and will build up a residue over time.

coldcallerbaiter · 23/01/2024 17:47

He can pay the plumbing bill then.

He might be doing it as he doesn’t realise it will block it. I didn’t know when I was a very young homeowner but I learnt….

GasPanic · 23/01/2024 17:47

A little bit won't hurt that much but if he keeps on doing it he will probably block up the drain. With wax I would guess you are more likely to screw up your own pipes than public ones.

JanglingJack · 23/01/2024 17:48

Idiot.

It's obvious that any fat that will pour, will solidify on cooling. Fuck up your own drainage and further down cause Fatbergs.

Papyrophile · 23/01/2024 17:48

We've just had a letter from SWW telling us that they've had to clear a fatberg from the local main drain and not to put fats, foods or wipes into the system... pee, poo and paper only!

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/01/2024 17:50

He's a numpty.

I've worked in the sewerage industry and have seen more blocked drains and sewage treatment works than I care to mention.

skyeisthelimit · 23/01/2024 17:52

Tell him he is a twat and then send him a link to the local water board information.

No oils should be poured down the drain. Even the liquid oils will contribute to blockages.

Greydogs123 · 23/01/2024 17:54

Google fatbergs and start spamming him with the images. Find out how much it costs to unblock your own drain and see if he’s prepared to pay that amount. He’s an inconsiderate idiot and I’d be questioning what other inconsiderate things he’s capable of.

SaladDays2024 · 23/01/2024 17:56

I have been googling this just now and they say even veg oil shouldn't be poured down..i didn't know this and luckily for 20 years of cooking it hasn't caused problems maybe because the hot water is usually running, too, that I don't use much oil and live in London where it doesn't get that cold.

Cookerhood · 23/01/2024 17:58

I would never put oil down at all. Even liquid oil will collect around other debris & also will solidify at low temperatures (think of olive oil when it gets cold in the bottle).

Aquamarine1029 · 23/01/2024 17:59

He's an absolute idiot.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 23/01/2024 18:01

He's a dipstick.

What does he think happens to it, surely he even sees it solidifying as it hits the water / sink?!

HalloumiGeller · 23/01/2024 18:03

Wax?! What an idiot, OMG 😳. I soften it slightly with hot water and then bin it! As for oils/fats, I let it solidify and then bin it..
