Feel entitled to give long and regular missives on financial ‘wellness’ when they admit they’re often thousands of pounds in debt, can’t stop spending on clothes and holidays and live month to month?

It’s Jan so there’s obviously an increase in this stuff but I don’t understand how someone that’s got themselves in £40k debt in a YEAR feels entitled to dole out advice to try to recruit followers. These are the type of people you want to stay away from if you’re trying to manage better financially, surely?!

In my wider social circle (school parents, colleagues' partners, etc), there are a few self-employed Coaches who all seem to "coach" each other. On social media they're always tagging each other, making inspirational speeches at conferences, appearing on each others' podcasts and "Power Hours". The same names crop up all the time and they all talk about "manifesting", taking financial control, harnessing "feminine energy", etc. I just don't get it. How are any of them making money? One of them was on about manifesting £20k per month! If I were doing that I'd probably just quietly get on with it, not desperately try to train others to copy me!

Pyramid schemes.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 23/01/2024 21:07

I'm not sure she's had much success in the life coaching business as a result.

The most clueless, privileged, sheltered person I know is a life coach. It really needs some kind of regulation and qualification.

OpalOrchid · 23/01/2024 21:09

Even people who follow them to slag them off give them attention. Just stop watching them.

Yeah you’re talking about Yasmine and she’s a dickhead. She had masses of debt before and a company paid it all off for her. But because she lives in fairy land she has now run up another 40k of debt in 6 months. And is trying to lecture others, the irony, in financial management. The kicker is that she’s had good jobs, she owns a property in London, she just has champagne taste on a Prosecco budget and thinks she’s entitled to live the high life! Meanwhile her teenage son and her daughter are sharing a bedroom while she fannies about spending money on shit

Never heard of her but you must follow her to know so much about her.

Because they are paid to shill any of crap to the morons who follow them.

I'm an adult so I don't take any notice of "influencers"

@Isometimeswonder I know you’re trying to be smart/ cute but these people have millions of adult followers. Being an adult doesn’t make you intelligent unfortunately.

I watch an influencer. She tries to project an image of wealth but her behaviour is not that of a financially literate person. I find it fascinating. The content is extremely dull and repetitive. The influencer films herself unloading a dishwasher and then puts on a new top. The comments are all very positive and the commenters all seem to regard the lifestyle as one to aspire to. It's so strange.

There's talk of manifestation. The person is clearly not financially comfortable. The commenters clearly see the influencer as wealthy and living the dream.

I've never watched any other influencers so I don't know if they are all like that.

I used to follow her, I don’t anymore. I unfollowed when she had the debt magically paid off for her and started giving out dodgy financial advice she’s not qualified to give. Unfortunately the way social media works, her content still ‘pops up’ hence me being able to see she’s spunked all her money up the wall again

Meowandthen · 24/01/2024 19:36

The ones who pimp out their children for likes are the ones I find despicable. I wonder how many of these children will,be so happy about their lives being totally online when they get older. It’s such personal stuff.

itsnotabouthepasta · 24/01/2024 19:44

The only “influencers” I follow are dog people. This.is.tatum and bulldogpabs are the only reason I log into insta

WalterBurke · 24/01/2024 19:57

Sometimes the information they peddle, is correct they just dont use the information themselves. @Strangermanger

Stopped clocks…

beatrix1234 · 24/01/2024 20:19

Oh boy, I have a young’ish man as neighbour who happens to be a popular dating coach for straight men on YouTube, sometimes I engaged in friendly chit chat with him as I was curious and like to make friends with my neighbours. One day I asked him out to the local pub for a drink (it was not a date, just for some friendly banter) and he ran away in the opposite direction. He later confessed me he suffers from social anxiety and doesn’t go for drinks with women. He’s been my neighbour for 5 years, single and never seen him with a woman.

Go figure. He gives advice to men on how to be a “ladies man”. 🤣

SheSaidHummingbird · 24/01/2024 20:21

@Mudflapflat Who? What a random thing for an influencer to post. I'm out of touch!

? im puzzled

MorrisZapp · 24/01/2024 21:10

Oh god not the feminine energy woman. I follow her because she has a relaxing voice but holy crap she spouts some regressive garbage. 'create warm space for him to step in and step up'. I just keep picturing that man from Wife Swap shouting CAROL when his pudding basin of porridge was empty.

There is a saying that "even a stopped clock is right twice a day" which is used as an analogy to the fact that even someone you think is full of shit will occasionally say something you can't help but agree with.

true and much apricated

PlipPlopChoo · 24/01/2024 21:24

I doubt for one minute they believe the shite that they are talking, all they are doing is trying to earn a few quid.

Think of it like people on TV adverts. Most of them will not give two shits about the goods or services that they are promoting. It's only a job.

notameangirlhun · 24/01/2024 21:43

I used to go to school with a fairly big influencer and her online persona is so different from how she used to be.

She’s either changed A LOT over the years or she is very fake.
