making out im actually doing something to thats damaging to dds immune system!
ffs

shes also told me its time to move her on from that now

oh and she actually thinks it a good idea to introduce 9 month old babies to other toddlers and babies that are ill, as according to her this also builds up their immunity

mmh. my MIL was similarly funny about bfing after a certain age (6 mths, from memory). try not to worry about it, hard I konw, and do what you think is best for her.

MonkeybirdisboredWITHbuns · 19/03/2008 20:08

Mad! Bonkers! Nuts!

Oh...

...Except for the last bit think that's quite a good idea actually...

constancereader · 19/03/2008 20:08

How very annoying.
Give her a leaflet about the benefits of bf!

glaskham · 19/03/2008 20:09

Dont listen to her....do what YOU want....i had my step-MIl telling me my dc's were too old after 6mths, so i used to make a point of whapping it out in front of her every time they cried!!haha!!

tissy · 19/03/2008 20:10

tell her she is building up her own immunity, thanks very much. Does she think that your milk contains something that depresses it? Every little minute germ that dd goes near will stimulate an immune response! Breast milk does lots of other good things, and it doesn't damage teeth....

ALMummy · 19/03/2008 20:12

My FIL asked me in an exasperated way when I was going to give DD "normal milk". DD was two weeks old. A heavy silence would fall whenever I left the room to breastfeed and yes all feeds were conducted in the spare room. I BF till DD was 14 months old so that is a lot of time spent in the spare room .

milkgoddess · 19/03/2008 20:14

monkey, are you messing about about agreeing with the last bit

Jane68 · 19/03/2008 20:16

Well the World Health Organisation recomends stopping aged two, I would suggest they know al ot more than your Mum. Do it when its right for you.

MonkeybirdisboredWITHbuns · 19/03/2008 20:16

No actually. Since there is some evidence that early illness does contribute to a strong immune system. In the old days, when someone had chicken pox, they used to advertise the fact so they could arrange playdates so that kids got it when younger and thus in theory it was less virulent than later.

Obv some risks with this strategy...

But, I do think there is good research about how the immune system does need 'challenging' when kids are young.

cupsoftea · 19/03/2008 20:20

lol - bet she has lots more good childrearing info!!!

milkgoddess · 19/03/2008 20:22

well, shes a right old bat at timese so i just tend to think EVERYTHING she says is wrong.

she also commented today on how "coloureds" are alright,if you get the odd one on there own!!
she was talking about why she moved houses ffs
she has so many warped views

milkgoddess · 19/03/2008 20:23

cupsoftea, oh yeah, i think the who should employ her as a consultant, as she cleary knows so much

OP posts:
cupsoftea · 19/03/2008 20:24

she should send them her research ideas!!

PotPourri · 19/03/2008 20:25

Just ignore her. Say 'mmmm' when she brings it up and change the subject. It's just not worth getting into the discussion. You don't need to convince her of anything, it is nothing to do with her - your baby, your choice. Just make sure you don't ask her for advice about DDs health or eating habits or you will be 'inviting' her in to interfere.

contentiouscat · 19/03/2008 20:27

Both my Mum & my MIL thought I BF for too long - they both had children in the 70s when powdered milk was the way to go and I guess BF was something only lentil weavers would CHOOSE to do then

I just said "things have changed a LOT since you had a baby" and also pointed out that they wouldnt have appreciated being told what to do with THEIR babies

DC 1 I kept going until he started biting at about 10 months DC 2 until 14 months as the teeth were slower to appear and not quite as spiteful

Jane68 · 19/03/2008 20:31

You could always go the direct route and tell her to stop talking sh*t, works like a charm with my Mum.

thebluefoxategreensocks · 19/03/2008 20:38

Just ignore her! Extended breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your daughter's immune system. The longer you bf, the stronger it will be. I'm still bfing my 28mo daughter (as well as tandem feeding my 12mo son). They're both very healthy (always have been). Have the occasional colds, got chickenpox last summer. But nothing major and they don't stay ill for very long either. Whereas young children in the area seem to be barking like seals (awful coughs) for months! Not had any of that with my two.

wahwah · 19/03/2008 20:46

Had to say something as this made me My aged Mum in her indirect way started dropping hints at about the same age. I can't credit her entirely with my decision to extend breastfeeding, but my son is now 26 months and shows no signs of stopping.

You may have to stick to your guns now, as the next issue will probably be toilet training. Apparently back in the dark ages when we were spawned, they had the time to put tiny infants on potties for weeks at a time until they toilet trained at exactly the same age as ours will be when they're ready...probably built up their immune systems too!

I like Jane68's strategy though, sounds like it's pretty effective.

mawbroon · 19/03/2008 20:48

I was told once that bf wasn't any good because it stopped them getting ill and building up their immunity. WTF are these people on?

I pointed out that it's the exposure to the germs that builds up their immunity and if they can be exposed to it without getting ill, or with becoming less ill, then all the better.

And since then have only "hmmmd" at this person's comments. Can't be arsed tbh
