Am I feeding my formula fed baby incorrectly?

AIBU to now think I'm feeding my baby incorrectly?

Hi,

I had my baby at 37w2d and she weighed 2810g at birth. She's now almost 8 weeks (tomorrow).

I've included her weight chart for reference.

Up until the last two days I've been feeding her 2oz every two hours but it seems as though recently she's been wanting more as she's finishing her feed completely and crying for more straight after. I'm trying to now up her feeds to 3oz but my issue is she's still wanting to be fed every 2 hours. Surely 3oz every 2 hours can't be correct for her weight?

Background information:

She has a suspected CMPA and is currently drinking prescribed milk m

If she is eating it and keeping it down then she needs it. if it was too much she’s soon throw it back up again.
Babies don’t follow charts just go with it

aardonpardonwenttothegarden · 22/01/2024 22:02

Babies will grow and would like to eat / drink more. If you're very concerned ask your GP / HV. I'd say it's normal. Just ensure you're burping regularly as well.

Going by adjusted age, she’s close to the 6w growth spurt. So may just be feeding more due to that.

dementedpixie · 22/01/2024 22:09

2oz is a tiny amount. Does she finish the 3oz bottles? If she does then put more in each bottle. If she takes a larger amount at a time then maybe she'll go longer before needing another feed.

dementedpixie · 22/01/2024 22:09

P.s. I see no picture

zurala · 22/01/2024 22:10

Babies are supposed to feed often, it's not natural for them to go hours in between feeds. So it sounds perfectly normal to me. Just feed her what she wants when she wants, as long as you are doing paced feeding you'll be ok.

Ladyj84 · 22/01/2024 22:11

Forget the chart all babies are different if she wants more she's hungry and that's why she's still feeding so often

user2233 · 22/01/2024 22:12

Sorry forgot to include the chart

Are you doing paced feeding?

LittleRebelGirl · 22/01/2024 22:14

Can't see the chart. Don't know her current weight. But 3oz is a very small amount. Feed her on demand. If she wants more, give more. That is how babies should be fed. If she ever takes the full amount, next feed increase again. There should always be some left in the bottle so you know she is taking what she needs.

user2233 · 22/01/2024 22:15

Sorry what is paced feeding? Isn't feeding 2oz every two hours paced feeding? 🙈 am I doing it wrong? x

user2233 · 22/01/2024 22:16

@LittleRebelGirl thank you. The HV asked me how much and how often I feed her and when I mentioned it was 2oz every 2 hours she didn't seem concerned. She just mentioned to not over feed? Hence why I'm worried that she wants more - but HV mentioned that? x

Your baby hasn't read the chart, they are for guidelines.

I fed my baby two hourly for about six months, albeit breastfed but some need little and often. If she's asking for more then she needs more I would have thought.

redsky21 · 22/01/2024 22:17

3oz is still a tiny amount, is there a reason you are limiting it?? She's still wanting to be fed every 2 hours because you're not giving her enough at each feed. I would offer a 6oz bottle and see how much she drinks, can guarantee she will go longer between feeds with a larger amount.

Notadoormat4 · 22/01/2024 22:17

Try her with 4oz on her next feed. 37 weeks is still term. She's wanting to be fed more often because she's hungry.

It's easier to Google "paced feeding" and look at the images.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 22/01/2024 22:18

Why are you feeding her every 2 hours? Babies need sleep in order to grow. Try to give her more formula and stretch the feeds out gradually (maybe by 15 mins or so, nothing drastic!)

dementedpixie · 22/01/2024 22:18

If she's draining the bottles then you need to add more to each one. How much is she having in 24 hours?

dementedpixie · 22/01/2024 22:19

Why only 2oz at a time?
If she wants more at a time then you should give more

Sherrystrull · 22/01/2024 22:19

When she's hungry, feed her until she's full. Throw out the charts and be guided by your baby.

DontGoGran · 22/01/2024 22:20

She absolutely needs more than 2oz. Increase it by at least an ounce, if she still drains the bottle increase it again. And look up paced feeding as suggested by PP.

Try that calculator, according to her weight she should be taking more like 4oz each feed.

My 10 week old is taking between 5-6oz each feed but he is heavier.

Baby Formula Calculator - How Many Ounces to Feed Baby Chart

The baby formula calculator finds the amount of infant formula to feed your baby - per day and per feeding.

Sorry for everyone wondering why I've been giving her 2oz at a time is because one of her symptoms of the CMPA is being sick. She kept throwing up so was giving her little milk and often. She's been on the new prescribed milk two weeks now and is wanting more milk since her symptoms have somewhat settled, but due to her being sick I wasn't sure if I could give her more. When I spoke to the HV she said don't over feed her so I left it at that. But I do think she needs more milk. Just scared I'll be told by HV that I'm over feeding?

TheShellBeach · 22/01/2024 22:22

OP if your baby now weighs 3.8 kg at eight weeks I'd be offering at least four to five ounces.

The gaps between feeds would normally be longer, too.

dementedpixie · 22/01/2024 22:25

@user2233 it's your baby and your choice as to how to feed her. Overfeeding would be where you try to force your baby to take more than they want. Feed to your baby's appetite rather than what the hv or box says
