Leavers Parties - sanity check

iammorethanjustamum · 22/01/2024 15:57

Dear Mumsnet....

2022 leavers party cost me £20 - kids got A LOT for that in a local village hall.

2024 price is £40 in a local HOTEL and i am like WTAF

For context its a catholic school, they their own school hall plenty big enough

PLUS a church hall and bar also big enough.....

AIBU to think this is too much??

Local village hall/school hall = organisers have to clean up afterwards, you can bet not many parents will help out even after promising they would

Local hotel = the cost covers everything, including cleaning up after tens of children hyped up on sugar

I know which I'd push as an option if I was on the organising committee. Exactly the same reason why many parents pay extra to have children's parties at soft play instead of village halls. You literally pay for the chaos to be removed.

£40 is cheap, is this primary or high school?

mn29 · 22/01/2024 17:11

Is it primary school or secondary? Primary school - too much. Secondary- £40 not too steep really for an event at a hotel.

Londonrach1 · 22/01/2024 17:18

Wow that's cheap. Hope ours that cheap when she's that age.

It's hard work organizing it op. Hope you got lots of help

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/01/2024 17:56

It does seem a bit high but depends on the age group, what is included (food, entertainment/music)
Watch out for the expensive extras they will start adding - commemorative sweatshirt. The hardback photo album - an American style yearbook , and donation of a thank you gift to the school ( an expensive item -think something commemorative for outside the school).

PaperDoIIs · 22/01/2024 17:58

We paid nearly £200.😬

StripyHorse · 22/01/2024 18:37

Is it the school that has decided this or is it being organised by a group of parents who have decided on the venue?

Also, is it just for the child or child + parent (s)? Are siblings included?

Whether it is unreasonable depends on exactly what is included and how much extra you might be expected to pay for other y6 activities / momentoes.

Wow! Shocked at the responses. Paid £10 for eldests primary school leavers do at a community hall (2 yrs ago). Parents chipped in with food/djing/clearing up etc. When I left primary we had a chippy tea in the school hall 😆 Kids today really live it up!

iammorethanjustamum · 22/01/2024 21:29

Primary

Its more about going against the "values" and charity this and that....

OP posts:
iammorethanjustamum · 22/01/2024 21:31

@nadine90 Same...its gone from 20 to 35 to 40.....that's some inflation.

This does NOT include hoodies

@Londonrach1 I think only people that don't usually organise events think it's hard work imo.

Many people put their names forward for PTA and didn't get any response....speaks volumes also again imo

iammorethanjustamum · 22/01/2024 21:36

@StripyHorse we don't know

It says hall hire (it's a hotel), food, photo booth and more....what is more for what would potentially be 3600 coming in I'm a bit 🤔

£40 each for an event at a hotel presumably with catering is pretty good!

Hoolahooploop · 22/01/2024 21:46

Oh for primary school. Yes that’s mad! But we didn’t have that back ‘in my day’.

I was thinking sixth form leavers in 2007 which was like £25 back then at a local hotel.
