Me, Myself and Yourselfs

Can't watch The Traitors anymore because everyone says "myself" when they mean 'me" and yourself/s" when they mean "you". Driving me (myself?) up the bloody wall!

Yes, I think my allergy to this developed when I was in the process of buying/selling my house a few years ago. I can’t un-notice it when I hear it now and actually have a fairly visceral reaction to it.

Indeed. It's definitely estate-agent speak. I can only guess that anybody who uses -self, -selves thinks it makes them sound more educated or intelligent, rather than the opposite.
Please don't get me started on 'your good selves.' 🙄

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/01/2024 10:11

I and me is easy to remember - just take away the other person.

So "Daisy and I will get the train" is correct as if you take away Daisy you are left with "I will get the train" which is correnct.

Whereas -"the conductor gave Daisy and me a fine for not having the right ticket" is correct because if you take away Daisy you are left with "the conductor gave me a fine for not having the right ticket"

I is the nominative (eg subject) whereas me is the dative (eg indirect object

pickledandpuzzled · 23/01/2024 10:21

I know how to use it, Ginmonkey. I’d never write it incorrectly.

It slips out when I’m speaking- Bill asked Fred and I to go.

So I’m fine with the subject, but occasionally slip up colloquially with the object.

Lifeinlists · 23/01/2024 10:26

@Ginmonkeyagain
I agree that it's easy and yet, when I was teaching in a 'top' independent school, I would see notices in the staff room "Please speak with Daisy or I about...".

My urge to correct 'with' and 'I' with my red pen (I think those are probably banned now) required much self control. Plus I might have been caught in the act!!

TheLostOnes · 23/01/2024 10:31

I can't help but comment on this everytime I watch the traitors. I drives me mad. Thankfully I don't watch the apprentice so am spared listening to it there too. Married at first sight has lots of people that do this too.

I am a complete hypocrite though as I know I almost always use me rather than I in my speech, even when I is appropriate. I think it's a throw back to where I grew up. Using 'Tom & I' would have been judged as pretending to be posh so it's just not something that comes naturally to me to say. Strangely, I will always write it correctly though. I have noticed more and more people saying I when it should be me though (so opposite of what I do). This also grates on hypocritical me.

Bookist · 23/01/2024 10:47

Poor spoken grammar makes my hackles rise. I immediately classify the speaker as being a bit thick. I know this makes me a bad person.

Tangofandango · 23/01/2024 10:49

John Torode is one of the worst ones with "Gregg and I", e.g "Bring your plate up to Gregg and I". He says it constantly regardless of context.

Ginmonkeyagain · 23/01/2024 11:11

@pickledandpuzzled Oh indeed. I also interchange between both words in normal speech. English is a language that it is easy to be understood in and is relatively forgiving of the "wrong" grammar.

I am currently on a mission to improve my French grammar, so am probably thinking too closely about these things!

John Torode is one of the worst ones with "Gregg and I", e.g "Bring your plate up to Gregg and I". He says it constantly regardless of context.

That’s particularly poor because it’s a predictable phrase he uses a lot. He could choose to correct that as it isn’t used spontaneously.

Tangofandango · 23/01/2024 11:35

pickledandpuzzled. I think he thinks he sounds intelligent. If only he knew.

A lot of lrish people use it as its a direct translation from the lrish language and probably came into the vocabulary from that.
But it's still annoying here!

But the way they use it seems entirely different and sounds fine. Maybe it's the accent!

In English English it sounds ridiculous

Nanny0gg · 23/01/2024 14:01

OchonAgusOchonOh · 23/01/2024 00:00

Myself etc is frequently used in hiberno English but it follows rules. It's a more casual, informal term so I don't see it as trying to sound more intelligent/posh/official /etc. However, it just sounds wrong to me if it doesn't follow the hiberno English rules.

However, I do think the misuse of I vs me is people trying to sound posher/more intelligent.

Can I ask, those of you who hate the use of myself, do you use I and me correctly when referring to you and another person? What would you say if you were taking someone you and Jo were heading into town?

I am going to town.
Jo and I are going to town.

Notmetoo · 23/01/2024 14:02

YANBU to find it very annoying but YABU to stop watching Traitors because of it because it's one of the few really good things to watch on TV

Nanny0gg · 23/01/2024 14:03

SkySecret · 23/01/2024 01:02

The other one I hate, which seems to be escalating, is missing out “to be” in a sentence. E.g:

“it needs fixed”

NO. It needs “to be” fixed. OR it needs “fixing”

Sounds dumb, and so irritating.

That's colloquial Scottish (Glaswegian?)

Again I don't mind that.

It sounds ridiculous with a London accent

Rogley · 23/01/2024 14:03

One of my colleagues sent an email today saying 'I have been trying to get hold of yourself to discuss this'

What the absolute fuck. Where did that even come from!? On what planet does that sound correct? It made me cringe that this is in a professional email to a client

ChaoticCrumble · 23/01/2024 01:05

(it’s a paper on reflexive pronouns for anyone not wanting to click a pdf)

As far as I'm concerned it's unintelligible!

I'll just stick with knowing it's wrong!

I am going to town.
Jo and I are going to town.

And what about if you are asking someone to join you and Jo going to town?

Which is of course the question I should have asked in the first place😀

mn29 · 22/01/2024 10:25

Drives me mad too. It’s not just on the traitors, it’s everywhere. I think people use yourself/myself to try and sound more intelligent but most of the time their use is incorrect so the opposite is true.

Edited

I've heard atrocities such as "Give it to myself" on courses and each time, it's made me want to just leave!

"Do you want to come to town with Jo and me?" It's easy - just imagine what you'd say if Jo were not coming along.

It does my heart good to see people using me correctly instead of the ubiquitous "I".

Lovetotravel123 · 23/01/2024 14:16

Totally agree! What’s really annoying in my work is that the senior person there does this and so other people follow, even when I use it correctly.

Notmetoo · 23/01/2024 14:22

Isittimeformynapyet · 23/01/2024 09:30

So if Steve couldn't make it would you say "it will be I attending the meeting"?

In an email I would say 'I will attend the meeting' Not me will attend the meeting.
If responding verbally and asked who will attend the meeting I might say me, or I will. Both are correct.
So depending on the context both sentences are correct ' Steve and I will attend' ' ' it will be me and Steve who attend'
But never myself and Steve!
