To cancel travel

Due to travel to Manchester today for work- aibu to cancel the trip due to the weather? If I cancel, the company will be out of pocket a large amount due to unused travel/hotel costs for a dozen people. plus it will be short notice and disruptive for the colleagues going if I cancel - will likely annoy people. But I’m worried about the impact to trains etc and don’t want anyone to be stranded. Not sure what to do

I cannot see a full attendance to the meeting, I think a lot will cancel, so it might be worth gauging opinion before setting off If possible?

The weather warnings seem to stop at 6am.
If its OK the trains will be running. And you'll look daft for cancelling if the trains are OK.

I'd go with it, if people are late so be it, especially as its an overnight couple of day event.
It could be a royal pita to reschedule for some people especially if they have partners who also work away or have children to consider

Rethinking that you might be better to push the start time back to 11.00 (assuming it was a 9am start). Or play it by ear and see when the majority turn up.

I'd probably think differently if it wasn't an overnight trip but seems daft to cancel completely

It’s one overnight

thanks for the feedback

Any other views also appreciated btw! It could be an emerging situation

Have the meeting if its a yellow warning. Let attendees know if if they have to travel in an Amber warning or their trains are cancelled then they are excused

CantFindTheBeat · 22/01/2024 07:27

Can you get there safely OP?

setsailsam · 22/01/2024 07:29

I can but I’m relatively close by - some are travelling from extremely long distances

Is there the option to hold the meeting and people who are in areas covered by an amber warning can teams/zoom in?

Some people may have travelled to the area yesterday to avoid travelling in the bad weather. If you're hosting and can get there safely then I think you should hold the meeting and anyone who cannot attend can attend virtually.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 22/01/2024 07:33

Use Zoom for those not able to make it?

It's quite popular in these modern times 😉

LadyGAgain · 22/01/2024 07:35

I'd go ahead. It's calm now.

Trains from Scotland badly affected

That was known before the storms - they cancelled the trains from 7pm last night and they are checking the tracks for floods and damage before getting back to normal. Things are supposed to start moving around noon.

I imagine anyone traveling by train from Scotland would already either have cancelled or have a contingency plan in place.

underneaththeash · 22/01/2024 08:39

Ask everyone, if some can get there safely, they should. The ones who can't - join on teams.

We're in the SE and there are a lot of trees down, the next village to us, can't get out. Train seems to be running, but with massive delays.

Outthedoor24 · 22/01/2024 15:52

What was the eventual outcome ?
