My son is 2 (nearly 3) and was complaining about "sore eyes" for a few days. I took him to see the GP (no problems with vision) who seemed a little concerned due to the oddness of the symptom.

They thought it may possibly be a red flag for meningitis as light aversion / eye pain is a symptom. As he seemed otherwise okay they sent me home with strict instructions to watch out for any other symptoms I.e. the telltale rash, not eating/drinking, lethargic, fever etc etc and if he became unwell to take him to be seen.

I have a checkup with them early next week.

The thing is, he has since that GP appointment seemed fine in himself (aside from occasionally telling me his eyes and tummy hurt). He is eating a little less but not drastically so and is still drinking and having wet nappies. Seems happy enough playing and so on.

He's just randomly spiked a temperature this afternoon of 38.3. He has been absolutely fine all day other than not really fancying much to eat. Not upset, not sleepy, not clingy etc.. the only reason I checked his temp was because he felt hot when I changed his nappy.

Basically my AIBU was would you rush to an out of hours tonight due to this (because of the GPs concerns re meningitis and telling me to get him seen if any other symptoms) or would you just wait until GPs app early next week and mention it then?

Obviously I intend to keep an eye on him and if he does actually appear to be unwell I will take him of course but he seems perfectly happy.

I would take him! Best to be cautious if the M word is being wafted around! He sounds ok, but speaking as a parent whose baby had meningitis and septicaemia, you cannot even begin to comprehend the horror and terror of it, so always err on the side of caution. Hopefully he's ok and just has a low grade virus or something x

I am sure you are probably there already but if in doubt always take small ones in.

My youngest caught meningitis at 5 weeks. He had no rash, no symptoms. But he got a 37.8 temp and I noticed his little feet were mottled. I took him in and I joked as I was leaving that I will be back in a couple of hours as the older kids and DP called me mad. As soon as we were there they knew something was wrong. His heart rate was through the roof. He was seriously dehydrated despite wet nappies. He deteriorated so quickly overnight. Luckily by the time the blood culture and spinal results confirmed he was already better as they treated him with precautionary antibiotics. Had I not taken him in and kept him one more night to wait and see he would have certainly had to fight for his life and/or been left with some serious problems.

Ring 111 and go to OOH. I was in hospital with my baby for 12h+ due to dehydration/fever, they did nothing but monitor him and when we left I apologised for wasting their time as they didn't even need to treat him. They said 'you and your GP were worried enough to send him here, we were also worried, we have all now got reassurance. That's important. Always bring little ones in if you're worried.' Much better to potentially waste a few mins of doctor's time and some of yours than risk a sudden decline and serious condition. Good luck.

@Dogsandbabies how scary, did you just go because of the temperature or did you have a gut feeling something was wrong?
