Airbnb review - unnecessarily harsh?

Queenbouffant · 21/01/2024 09:47

Long time lurker, first time poster so gentleness please.

I would like some perspective about a situation I find myself in.

I went on a big family trip abroad recently and for our final stay, had booked an amazing apartment on the beach. It wasn’t cheap (£300 a night) for 3 adults so we wanted to end the trip on a high.

Everything was booked & paid for in advance, but up to check in received no book in details, even though I had conversations with the owner via message about confirming the booking and confirming payments. I queried with the company (Airbnb) who said to give it some time and the owner should respond to my questions. When we arrived at the address still no check in details and we were wondered we were going down the scam route.

Eventually after a few calls with Airbnb, they gave me the owners number, who I had to call about getting in to the apartment.

The owner had no knowledge of what was going on but let us in to the apartment which wasn’t ready. A few things needed cleaning and what not. We weren’t impressed but brushed it off as a genuine mistake and that was the end of it.

The owner came back the next day when I was out and asked my 70 year old mother in law to come in and get my mobile number. She was reluctant to give it out so took his number instead. The issue was he said we hadn’t paid for the trip. We had.

When I got back I double checked bank statements and everything was legit on the booking website. I phoned him on my MIL’s mobile (didn’t have roaming for the country on mine) and he asked for lots of personal info like my full name, email, etc etc said I had to email him all my bank statements, booking confirmation etc etc and sort it. I told him I had paid for the trip, it was all confirmed on the booking end, and suggested he get in touch with the booking company to get his payment. I did give him the confirmation ID to track the payment. I said we were trying to enjoy an end to the holiday and this wasn’t my problem to sort. He hung up and we heard no more from him, so assume he got his payment.

Fast forward to review time, I left a review saying the property was lovely etc etc and would recommend the apartment BUT we had such a stress checking in and would recommend you check twice the property is actually booked. I also said the owner was lovely when we arrived but he came back the next day asking about payment which made my MIL a bit anxious.

I have since had a reply from the owner saying the review is not fair and it generates bad income AND he texted my MIL’s phone the same message, saved from when I rang him. She rang me last night, again, quite anxious about it.

I tried to complain to the booking company but received no response.

I am now questioning if my review was fair or if his behaviour was a bit dodgy.

Leave the review and tell MIL to block his number.

HollyKnight · 21/01/2024 10:11

Yikes! I wonder if someone has copied the details of his property and that's who you sent money to. Are there reviews on the page you booked with?

Queenbouffant · 21/01/2024 10:08

The other reviews were fine, albeit sparse

how many? and what’s his rating? how long has he been an owner on air bnib?

He’s complaining about the review OP left. She can only have left it against the listing she booked. So he must be connected with the listing OP booked.

TinderTime · 21/01/2024 10:13

Your review is 100% nicer than mine would have been!!

If it was Airbnb I have never had a problem with their booking system, however if it was through booking.com, and you're changing info to make your post a bit more anonymous, then I probably would believe the owner. I've had several dodgy bookings with booking.com.

Although I'd still give a bad review! As a PP said he can reply and apologise mentioning it was a glitch in the booking system.

But if the guy wasn't aware of the booking how was he to blame? I'm an Airbnb host, not sure what the heck I'd do if someone turned up that I wasn't expecting tbh

rwalker · 21/01/2024 10:15

Yes harsh
but all means mention the issue

which is air b and b took the booking and payment
there seems to of been an issue with passing this info on to your host

in fairness he honoured a booking he originally had no knowledge or payment for

Muchof · 21/01/2024 10:15

I think your review seems harsh and unfair. It sounds like there was a problem with Airbnb rather than this apartment or owner.

duckpancakes · 21/01/2024 10:16

You're fine. You left a review from your side. It's up to him to comment on that with his side

Livelovebehappy · 21/01/2024 10:17

It wasn’t clear whose fault it was - abnb or the host. Sounds like there were communication issues between them, which could easily have been the fault of abnb. I think I would have asked for clarification once the holiday ended, as to why the problems had arisen, before posting a review.

Cosyblankets · 21/01/2024 10:18

Queenbouffant · 21/01/2024 10:06

This was the bizarre thing, it was all very clear once booked and paid so we were surprised to receive no check in details 24 hours beforehand and the owner was equally baffled about who we were

So did you show him on your phone?

HollyKnight · 21/01/2024 10:19

RawBloomers · 21/01/2024 10:12

He’s complaining about the review OP left. She can only have left it against the listing she booked. So he must be connected with the listing OP booked.

Hmm well something doesn't add up then because she says she had conversations with the owner. It doesn't benefit the owner to then pretend he knows nothing about it because bad reviews are terrible for business.

RachelSTG · 21/01/2024 10:21

Your style of writing is very confusing so I struggled to follow. If your review was true I wouldn't worry.

RachelSTG · 21/01/2024 10:21

Why didn't you just show the owner your air B and B payment confirmation when they question you over the balance?

RachelSTG · 21/01/2024 10:22

@NCADHD - I disagree saying those struggling to understand the op is their fault. She does not write clearly, I struggled to follow as well

Cherry35 · 21/01/2024 10:22

You gave a fair review. With such an expensive property he had to be careful and make sure you can check in without hassles.

Besides, he was messaging with you prior to check in, perhaps he forgot and it's not your fault.

ClimbingHydrangea · 21/01/2024 10:24

I have booked with Air BnB and had to wait for the owner to message specific details on how to access the property (I.e a lockbox code) which arrives the day before/on the day. So that bit I believe.

Sounds like a glitch with Air BnB’s platform that the owner handled badly. I would leave your review given how he handled it.

Universalsnail · 21/01/2024 10:26

Your review was completely fair. In all honesty if you can edit the review I would add about the man now phoning your MIL so harassing the customers. Completely unprofessional.

wutheringkites · 21/01/2024 10:29

Was it actually Airbnb or are you using that as shorthand for a holiday let booked through another booking site?

yes i’m wondering this

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 21/01/2024 12:19

It is a reasonable review if it honestly reflects your experience. The owner gets a right of reply.

RawBloomers · 21/01/2024 15:57

What I have had happen with Airbnb sometimes is that the property is presented as being managed and rented out by the “owner”, but in reality there is a team of people of people managing a bunch of properties. So several different people might be answering messages as though the “owner” and they might not be the same person as on the ground at the property itself (who may or may not be the real owner).

ItsVeryHyacinthBucket · 21/01/2024 16:00

Airbnb isn’t 100% scam proof, we use it a lot but had someone try and rip us off last year in the exact same way. We backed out. Sorrry to hear you’ve had this OP.
