Renting dilemma

Hello 👋 from Australia: looking for advice.
I rent a run down old house in a good area but the house is awful. It’s been very hot here and the temperature is the same inside and out. A garden wall fell down last week. There’s holes in the floor and the walls. Cracks at almost every door jam and an oven that doesn’t work. Landlord turns up whenever he likes and casually walks
around the garden. Place is a dump and it’s wrecked my mental health.
have found a new place to rent. Same area, much nicer but smaller and much much more expensive. My question is; is it worth spending a huge amount to move, pay costs of breaking lease, and have increased rent cost or should I just suck it up and stay? I think I know what I want and need to do, but my autistic son is very against change. He will manage, as he’s had to in the past but it will not be easy. What would you do and why?

If you can afford it I'd move, compromising on your living conditions is very stressful. TBH the landlord turning up all the time would be enough for me, never mind the crumbling premises!

@Vcal2017

It sounds like a 💰 money pit idea,

He is slum landlord epitome of one even though it's a desirable kind of area

It's a no brainer for me

I would hot foot it from this house as quickly as possible...

You son needs to adapt or get used to change as its integral in life

I can understand change at first can be stressful at times though..

How much more expensive is the rent in the new place and how much is it going to cost to break your lease?

Vcal2017 · 20/01/2024 20:17

Thank you for your replies. It really helps
me.
its $50 a week more ( nearly $100 pounds)
and lease break would cost about $2000.
I can afford it but it’s a big chunk out of my life savings. Hence the dilemma.
ive been really depressed and it seems to be effecting my life a bit.

@Vcal2017

Why does it need to be an either being in a slum crumbling safety officer's nightmare property to rent option or

the alternative other option of potential money pit house that is downsizing with condition of it being a lot more expensive not only the removal costs, extra costs of breaking your current lease and the longer term costs for rental terms too?

Why not include consirder a alternative third option of just simply carrying on looking as often ,
regular basis as possible until sooner or later down the line something 🤔
better turns up housing accommodation wise for you ?

@Vcal2017

Also mentioning to other people who care about your welfare about that you really need to move on for x y z reasons as as soon as possible,

as then friends family ect will also be on the look out aswell, on your behalf so you don't miss out on the opportunity of finding somewhere as soon as possible,
better options housing wise for yourself .

cerisepanther73 · 21/01/2024 01:21

@Vcal2017

Could you consirder living in a studio apartment or a flat option rental option too?
whether temporarily or longer term ?

What about sharing an alternative accommodation on temporarily basis or longer term so its works out possible cheaper reasonable cost of renting expense etc too?,

what about a "bedsit" rental option temporarily accommodation until find somewhere more suitable better longer term housing
and put some of your personal belongings into a monthly rental of storage facility,
until you find somewhere better too..?

Need to reflect and consirder all housing options alternatives whether just for temporarily or longer term
temporarily alternatives accommodation are like stepping stones to a more suitable longer term option ...

@Vcal2017 $50 AUD is like £25, but it's actually irrelevant.

I don't know what the rental regulations are inAUS. But I would hope there is something very similar about tenants having the right to 'quiet enjoyment'

id find out what your position is legally before doing anything.

if he's breaking the rules he might get repairs done & stop acting like he lives there, or if you want to leave, let you go quietly without paying to break the lease.

$200 a month more is worth spending if it's a much better place, though as it's also smaller I'd keep looking!!
