To hate new flooring…..

Babs43ish · 20/01/2024 10:03

Hi I’m new to mumsnet so hope I’ve put this message in the right place. We’ve just had new lvt flooring laid to replace 25 year old laminate. It took me ages to decide on colour and now it’s down I hate it. The actual quality of the floor is great it’s just the colour that I hate. I haven’t said anything to my husband yet but it’s making me feel really down. I know it’s not a big problem and we are very lucky to be able to have a new floor but I just don’t know what to do about it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Get the room finished and properly "dressed". At the moment the floor is the main feature, but once it's part of a whole look you'll feel differently.

CornedBeef451 · 20/01/2024 10:33

We have pretty much the same flooring everywhere downstairs.

It felt a bit much to start with as it's just such a large area but I've got used to it now.

It's easy to sweep, vacuum and mop. So far has survived a big red wine spill, mouse blood and general mud and dirt by the front door.

It's mid colour so doesn't show cat hair or general grubbiness so it's a win for me!

Please don't worry OP. There must be a physiological effect with flooring. You spend days choosing and ordering samples, arguing over colours with your partner, imagining what it looks like and then it's laid and as room is pretty empty you get awful buyers remorse! Same thing happens every time with us! We almost got a divorce the other week as my partner hated the floor I picked. I knew would be perfect. When it was laid I hated it and was so disappointed but she loved it! It was me just being silly and it looks fantastic 2 week later! All you see for the first few days is floor. As you start to live in it, you don't notice it, you start putting everything back in place and buy some new artwork and furnishings and then you love it! In a few weeks in and you will feel different!

So true 😂

Give it another month or so OP.
If you still dislike it, get it changed.
But you should tell DH now that you don't like it so that you can share opinions and discuss options.

In one of our previous homes, we had this beautiful wooden floor installed everywhere. It really was beautiful and there was a lot of it, but I didn't like it once it was installed. DH didn't dislike it as much as I did but he wasn't in love with it either.

It had been very carefully chosen and it took a long time to decide on that floor.

Got it changed one year later to something completely different. Equally as beautiful and we both loved the new floor.

An absolute right headache in terms of such a big expense twice and we also had to change some expensive furniture in places to go with the new floor.
But it's been the best decision ever. Not regretting it for one second and I can't believe we lived with the first version for a whole year seeing it and using it all that time.

Be brave and make changes where you can if something makes you feel disappointed!

I think it looks lovely too.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 20/01/2024 10:54

I think it looks great and will be timeless so no need to change anytime soon when grey finally goes out of style.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 20/01/2024 10:59

We replaced our flooring when we renewed our kitchen 4 years ago. Hated it from the outset. We lived with it for several years trying to convince ourselves we could live with it. We've just pulled it up and redone it. My advice would be to live with it for a year or so. By then you'll know if you really do hate it or not!

Anxhor · 20/01/2024 11:02

It's fine I thought it was going to be a horrible naff grey shade

You won't notice it once you've filled the empty bare space up

Simonjt · 20/01/2024 11:06

What about the colour do you dislike? If its too warm, a neutral rug/accessories will help, if too cool, the oppsite will help.

I like that it appears to be essentially a normal oiled wood colour, rather than bleached, burned etc.

spicedlemonpie · 20/01/2024 11:27

I like it i even like the color of the walls tbh my walls are the same bare love it.
Give it time your like it its just new you have to get used to it.
Im a minimalist anyway so it's totally my kind of look bare empty clean no clutter in sight.
You should be happy some of the pics of homes i see on here are a mess with clutter you should be proud.

I had a wobble after our floor went down, love it now. Your floor looks great, just finish the room off and live with it a bit would be my advice.

Babs43ish · 20/01/2024 13:49

Thanks everyone 😊

I think it looks lovely!

LastRites · 20/01/2024 14:02

I love it! I think your problem may be that this warm, natural pine colour is not in fashion and hasn’t been for a while; greyed out wood is still trending, but it will swing the other way at some point!

My floors are warm pine (tongue and groove originally floorboards) and I love the warmth of the wood. It’s so versatile in terms of paint colour, art work & furniture as it’s sort of a neutral rather than a fashionable look iykwim? Not sure I’ve explained that very well, but I think your choice is warm and timeless ✨

DyslexicPoster · 20/01/2024 14:02

It's lovely. It's a warn colour and matches your table.

I'd second getting some rugs in a colour you will love. Rugs move about and p me off. So after a while you will also be fed up of the rug and then your bare floor will feel great.

We have cream carpets from the old owners and can not afford to replace it. I have a glittery white deep pile rug over it. Lego gets lost in the rug, the rug is full of crumbs. The rug moves about the room With a mind of its own dispite a huge heavy coffee table on top. I loved the rug when new. Hated the carpet. Now I tolerate the carpet and hate the rug 🤣

yarnwitch · 20/01/2024 14:03

I think you might like it better once you've got skirting boards on and it looks finished. I think that will make a big difference

MaryActsLikeSheDontCare · 20/01/2024 14:07

It’s pretty much the exact same as my living room. I don’t like or dislike it, it’s just pretty plain and inoffensive. I think it might now be a dated look, and not what’s “in”. I think shades of grey are still what’s fashionable.

I agree that it will also look nicer when the room is finished.

My friend once paid ££££ to have her kitchen units painted. She hated it, and it took her a year to pluck up the courage to do something about it. She ended up getting a new kitchen.

DaphneduM · 20/01/2024 14:09

I love it too. We have very similar in our house in the hall, sitting room and dining room. So warm looking but very versatile for different decorating treatments. We've got a huge ivory coloured rug in our sitting room, an oriental rug in blue/red/cream tones in the dining room and an animal print front door mat in the hall!!!! Works for all those colours. Also doesn't show the dirt massively either. I detest those grey tones which will soon be out of 'fashion', so cold looking. Give it a bit longer and I'm sure you'll grow to like it. A decorating hint - hessian/sisal/wicker look great with this colour floor too - very chic and neutral if that's your thing.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 20/01/2024 14:42

I did the same, though mine is dark stone effect. Just had new kitchen so can’t alter colour. It shows every tiny little thing. It looks ok for ten minutes after washing. No way am I admitting it to dh. Yours however looks lovely. Paint the walls, add some colour.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/01/2024 15:31

I think it looks perfectly nice. Maybe add some nice art prints and photos in varied sizes/ different frames on the walls, then your eyes are drawn less to the floor. You will get used to it. It must be better than the old one : )

Menapausemum1974 · 20/01/2024 15:35

Cheek, I have that flooring! 😂

PickledPurplePickle · 20/01/2024 17:20

I really like it

Pop a table cloth on the table and it will break it up while you get used to it
