To become a skinhead to beat the itch ?

AIBU to shave my head entirely down to the skin in hope it alleviates my scalp itch ?

For years now I have suffered with a^^ very itchy scalp. To the point it keeps me awake at night for several hours at night.

I have been to the GP previously and was told "I can't see anything " after she examined my scalp . There are no open sores, no scaling / flaking .

Just this intense itch and burning sensation.

I have tried :
-over the counter shampoos such as Aphosyl which has 5% coal tar extract ,
-the usual head and shoulder type shampoos for dandruff
-phosphate and pharabens free shampoos

• a range of conditioners both wash out and leave in and oils incase the itching was due to scalp dryness

My hair comes out a fair bit when brushing although still plenty left . My hair is also extremely dry and feels like hay on my head and at this point I have also developed greys .

It is extra itchy when I am on my periods and my periods are awfully long , heavy and together with the itching of the scalp my life is hell for about 2-3 weeks out of each month . I have been referred for the bleeding but the wait is long .

I am not sure if it's related but I also have thick facial hair and body hairs .

In a nutshell , an ugly , hairy , itchy , bleeding , greying mess

Any help ?

It sounds like you haven't tried steroid or other creams (humectants) for eczema? Your gp could easily prescribe that

I have always struggled with anaemia and itchy skin is a major symptom for me. I now have annual iron infusions privately which sorts it. I know when I am due another because the itching comes back.

I’ve had this for years. Dd also has it. Tried every bloody thing. Moo goo, Philip Kingsley. Everything.

Then l discovered ‘As l am dry and itchy shampoo’

Stopped it for both of us overnight. Also totally cleared all the eczema Dd had on her neck and back. If we stop using it the itch comes back straight away.

I used to find Nizarol helpful, but now it makes it worse, as l was told by derm that it’s very drying.

20 years of itchy head nightmare solved by one shampoo

Eucerin scalp treatment balm and t-gel sensitive work for me. Always shampoo twice and use one of those round plastic shampoo brushes to massage the scalp when shampooing. Best of luck, itchy scalp is a nightmare.

I had this with menopause! I switched to Aldi/Tesco's cheapest of cheap shampoo and conditioner and it's gone! Highly recommend trying the most simple stuff

I have allergies that became substantially worse during peri menopause. The marker for allergy referral is very high as my GP is looking in to this for me.

I feel for you i really do 45 weeks ago i dyed my hair and the itch began with in seconds i was scratching non-stop.
I went to the GP got told it was contact dermatitis a reaction to hair dye.
Itch itch itch shampoos not helping so got out my shavers and shaved it of bald.
Not a 1 or 2-3 Bald i looked like a potato.
I used E45 shampoo from boots.
I still itched but not like i did almost a year now and the itch is almost gone.
I wash my hair twice a week now and only conditioner the ends.
I take a photo every week from the side to see how its growing im now have a little pony tail
As the weeks went on my head was healing now 45 weeks in my hair is healthy natural thick corkscrew curls and no itching like i was.
I have grays but rather that than scratch my skin off i really dont mind my grays.
On the scale of itching ive gone from 100 down to 4.

I get an itchy scalp as well, and I agree, it's maddening. I do get quite a lot of dandruff as well though.

Like you found, the likes of Head and Shoulders does nothing. Even the ones aimed at sensitive/itchy scalps.

The only thing that really keeps on top of it is a dedicated scalp shampoo. I've had luck with the therapeutic Nutrogena T-Gel shampoo. I've also done well with Polytar scalp shampoo.

I'm allergic to salicyclates, but only on my face/head. It's a common ingredient in shampoos, conditioner, hair products, moisturiser etc so I have to check carefully. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is also something many people react to and is in loads of stuff. Allergy tests might be helpful but I suspect you'd need to pay for private care.
