Holiday disaster

We booked a last minute holiday in UK for £450 a night for three nights. Arranged via agent, owner is abroad, property managed by agent. We had three young kids with us. Property was a victorian house.
We arrived just as cold spell hit a few days ago.
On arrival the temperature was 12 degrees and heating turned to that temperature.
managed to get heating as far as 16 degrees for the first night and it was still that temperature on first morning. To be clear, the radiators were fully working once we turned them on and heating was on non-stop. Problem we think was that property wasn't heated for a while and it took ages to warm.
Spent all first day dealing with the issues (there were few others, loo not flushimg etc).
By evening of second night, the house was at 20.5 degrees so decided to stay.
In the morning, upstairs is lovely warm, downstairs back to freezing. The massive extension has only underfloor heating so back to 16 degrees.
Kids in coats etc.
So we left 24 hrs early after spending most of the time there dealing with issues.
I obviously have documented all this via emails.
Just about to write a complaint.
AIBU -we should have sucked it up?

We have stayed in lots of period properties and never had any issue like this 🙈

My house is 16 degrees as standard 😂 I agree though for that money you should be able to control your temperature if you’re not as hot blooded as we are!

I haven't booked on airbnb

16 is a little on the chilly side (for a living room, perfect bedroom temp) but not cold enough for me to cut a holiday short or stop me from doing the things I planned.

regenerate · 19/01/2024 20:54

the idea of turning to three children and saying “all plans are off and everyone staying in because i have to make calls.” all morning

this was a 3 night stay!

You clearly are missing the point that they didn't want to go out as didn't sleep well at night (due to cold and train etc).
I didn't say kids everything is cancelled. I can't exactly not speak to someone from agency and say nah.. don't worry, I will begiing out, when I emailed them onnight 1 asking for urgent call first thing.
No need to comment further, thanks

would i have been peeved at arrival to a cold house? hell yes

would i have cancelled all planned activities, stayed at the property making calls and looking for alternative accommodation (that has to have a trampoline so… slim pickings) and then given up and left early? not a chance

NoKateMoss · 19/01/2024 20:57

Wow! I was in two minds before your reply to me but after that I think you sound really hard work. It sounds cold for sure but your post to me reinforces my suspicion you have overreacted.

they didn’t want to go out because they’d not slept well. So what did they do all day in the house whilst you made the calls and looked for alternative accommodation?

Citygirl007 · 19/01/2024 20:49

No, my plans were in the morning, which got cancelled because I dealt with the situation. That's when my tickets were booked for.

A house that is slightly under temp is not a good enough reason to cancel your plans and ruin your break though!

Exactly, so why cancel your plans! So stupid.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 19/01/2024 21:07

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz

It is, but they've just given up. We're gutted. 😞

OldPerson · 19/01/2024 22:00

You booked a 3-night UK holiday in January for £1350??? Seriously I've just booked a 15-night holiday in July in Italy (Naples, Rome and Florence) for £2,496 for 3 adults. Accommodation, trains and planes only. Obviously not a tourist package, but nice accommodation and cheap airlines. But I admire your stoicism. I admire the way you tried to fix issues. I think you're awesome role models for your children. Even if I can't get my head around your cost for a 3-night UK holiday in January. But definitely you deserve compensation for staying in a house that didn't offer minimum comfort - such as heat and flushing toilets. Chuckle to yourselves about the 8-hour delays and air traffic control strikes coming our way.

mamboshirt · 20/01/2024 00:47

I was always told that 17 degrees was the perfect temp for a baby/young child to sleep in. I'd prefer the 16 degrees rather than the 30 it is where I live at the moment.

16 really isn't cold. The Gro Egg doesn't even turn blue until it hits 15. Are you all getting enough iron? Our heating is perpetually at 16-18 and I'm typing in a t-shirt. We'd get too hot if it was higher.

rookiemere · 20/01/2024 06:40

I don't think the OP sounds like hard work, I think her life sounds like hard work. They threw money at this hoping it would meet her DCs requirements and they could enjoy a few days of semi relaxation. Instead that was spoiled by the condition of the property, and reading between the lines, feels like it was the last straw for OP.

You sound like my dad when I was growing up… freezing cold wooden floors is a childhood memory I don’t like to remember lol

regenerate · 20/01/2024 07:01

and then maintenance man tk turn at 6pm.

and what did he do? because you said the heating was absolutely fine “once the radiators were turned on”

regenerate · 20/01/2024 07:04

@NeptunaOfTheMermaidBattleSquadron

to you 16 degrees isn’t all that cold.

out of interest, if one of your family members didn’t agree and wanted it warmer - what would you response be?

Are you the home owner who didn't arrange for the heating to be put on as you seem to be getting involved a lot more than needed and pushing for the OP to put in a complaint as soon as possible so you can respond 😂

regenerate · 20/01/2024 07:23

😂

Yes i’m the owner. pushing someone to make a complaint. makes total sense

TheDevilGun · 19/01/2024 17:00

I would find 16 cold, my thermostat is set at 21 and that's just about right

21 is actually pretty warm, too warm imho.

You just seem to be getting a little to involved and annoyed at OP for no apparent reason 😂
