Mice in the house!

scaredofmice88 · 19/01/2024 12:31

I was just sat on the loo in our en suite and a mouse ran out in front of me from under the shower! I shouted and it rang back to where the towel is now stuffed in the photo. I'd heard scratching a couple of days ago but thought it would be birds.

What the heck do I do now? How has the damn thing got in?

Any advice?

We have had mice.

  1. Make sure they don't have access to any food. Not a crumb. Even empty your toaster trays after every use. Don't ask.........
  1. Get some plug in sonar deterrents. At least 1 on each storey. Definitely 1 in kitchen.

You could plug any entrance holes with wire wool, but bear in mind that if a pencil will go in a gap a mouse can.

Move

Good God! I would be in a total state of panic. At the same time, the best thing to do is keep calm. Shut it in there for now. Make sure there isn't a gap under the ensuite door it can get through. Honestly, I'd have to call somebody.

Get a cat

Yep, these worked a treat when I had a plague of the furry fuckers. I've had them for 15 years now, and not seen any hint of a mouse.

BMW6 · 19/01/2024 12:48

Jeez, why panic!? It's MICE not scorpions!🙄

Hadalifeonce · 19/01/2024 12:51

Buy a couple of mouse traps, they are usually about £1 each, load it with a small piece of frankfurter, it works every time in our house.

stayathomer · 19/01/2024 12:52

Get a cat
Our cat ignores mice. No interest in them. Our old cat used to be cruel and play with them before they killed them and left them in the house- I’d rather a mouse!!!

op live traps are amazing if you can bring yourself to do it-chocolate spread inside it and once the mouse smell it they run in then the door shuts, you walk down the road with it and open the door near a field or something. Have got out eight mice this year and now nothing since. Also make sure you’ve no food left around the house, it was our son eating crisp sandwiches in his room that started this!!!

orangegato · 19/01/2024 12:53

Caulk for the gap. Rat poison for a snack. Mesh air brick covers for outside if suspended wood floors. I’ve not tried the plug in things but sound worth a shot!!

Jitterybugs · 19/01/2024 12:54

It’s that time of year when they come in for heat and food if they can find an access point. There’s no escaping the fact that mice easily find their way into the house foundations and cavity walls. If they can find a way into the house from there they’ll do it.

You need to check for the tiniest gaps and fill them . You’ve already identified a gap around the shower so start there. Then work your way round the house checking skirting boards, cupboard floors, where pipes run eg under the sink.

stayathomer · 19/01/2024 12:55

Op here’s the trap-8 mice out all alive over the winter period and now living happily somewhere too far way for them to come back😉

Bowl over the top of that one and throw it outside. Get someone in to lay poison for the rest and have a good look around for gaps and holes where they might have got in. Are you a detached house by any chance?

Phonedown · 19/01/2024 13:02

When we tried the humane traps they didn't work. I was told to use peanut butter because the mouse can't grab it and run but when we checked the trap the peanut butter had been gotten at and the trap was closed but there was no mouse inside. We used actual traps and killed them. I felt so bad doing it but there was already evidence of them gnawing at the wiring behind our kitchen units and I had two very small children at the time and was so worried about a house fire that I decided it was them or us. Since then we had a new kitchen and extension built and all of their entry points were completely blocked. We also got a cat, but she's a bit useless and instead of deterring mice, she occasionally brings us alive ones as gifts.

Does anyone know of the sound deterrents have any effect on other animals?

Phonedown · 19/01/2024 13:03

It's fine I googled it and they don't harm cats.

FarmGirl78 · 19/01/2024 13:51

Hamsters, guinea pigs, pet spiders (yes, I know!) don't cope well with them.

CellarCeller · 19/01/2024 13:53

Emigrate

MatildaTheCat · 19/01/2024 13:53

It’s cold. They come in for warmth. Try to figure out how they are getting in- and it can be tiny gaps- and plug the gaps. Look around for clusters of droppings for clues as to where they are hiding.

And be very happy it’s not rats. Yes, I know this.

NamelessGhoul · 19/01/2024 13:57

I had one a few weeks back. I know exactly how mine got in, through the tumble dryer hose that vented outside from the kitchen. It had chewed its way out, presumably attracted to the heat.

i realised quite quickly it was there and trapped and killed it within 24 hours. I’ve now put a cage on the vent and a metal vent pipe.

I used a trap from B&Q that’s already baited and enclosed, you could tell it was triggered as the door was closed. If you’re particularly Squeamish you can just throw the whole thing without having to see the mouse.

Please don't use poison. It's such an awful death, which we witnessed in our garden when our neighbours put it down. It was very distressing to see what the poor thing had to endure. Had to put it out of its misery in the end.
When I had mice I borrowed a friend's cat for a couple of days. It didn't catch any, but they disappeared and never came back. Yes, caulk the holes.

DadJoke · 19/01/2024 14:00

They are absolute little sods. Unless you find and plug the entrance into your house, they will keep coming in. So, you need to kill the mouse, and remove the base of the shower and plug whatever hole allowed it in.

If you use a trap you need only the smallest amount of peanut butter smeared over it, rather than a lump - you aren't feeding it! If you can bear it, put poison down, and make sure (as other poster said) to remove all possible food from access, keep the kitchen spotless.

You can also get a very cheap black light, which will show you where the mice have been (their urine glows).

If you still see traces after a month, it's pest contol.

Jayne35 · 19/01/2024 14:35

*Jeez, why panic!? It's MICE not scorpions!🙄

Because they cause damage. Chewing wiring(which can cause fires) and other things. We had them in a cupboard upstairs (they came from next door and were only upstairs) and they wrecked my favourite expensive boots.

scaredofmice88 · 19/01/2024 14:43

I've just gone into the kitchen and one was running about there! Will it be the same one I've seen twice in one day or are we infested 😞

Because I'm a big sissy when it comes to rodents and I'd probably be stood on the bed screeching. Whereas I once chased a man trying to break into my car and I feel quite prepared to deal with a human home intruder. It is what it is.
