To order from JJs house

Hello everyone!

I've been on a desperate hunt for several dresses needed for events over the next year, and I keep coming across JJ's house. On the face of it, the dresses look quite similar to the kind of thing you can buy from Amazon, for a lot less! I feel a bit reluctant to take the risk, and wondering whether essentially it's just a slightly glossier website, but offering things of the same quality. You have to pay to try stuff on, and so I don't want to make a mistake. Has anyone use them? Is the quality significantly better than the kind of thing you would get on Amazon? Thank you!

I ordered my DD's prom dress from them last year and it was lovely. I took it to a dress-maker to check whether the fit needed adjusting and she was very complimentary about the quality. Can't compare to Amazon as don't order from there but our experience was good.

I got my bridesmaids dresses from them. They were great and exactly what they should have been. I had to return two and get a bigger size (no fault of jjs house) and the returns process was straightforward enough.

I think it's hit and miss like Shein but if you can't find anything else I'd definitely try it. Use your credit card for section 75 protection.

Thank you! I think that's what I'm concerned about in terms of the quality of the Make. I ordered a few dresses to try from Amazon, and they were all that kind of cheap chiffon feeling, not much to them really. Definitely wouldn't justify £100 plus. I like the variety on this website, and the variety of colours as well. Plus there seems to be quite a lot of different fits.

I'm probably in the market to spend about £100 of pop, so not looking to go massively high-end.

Also, if it is like Sheen, the dresses on there are insanely cheap. If that's the comparable quality, then that's ridiculous! Not judging what you're saying by the way, but just horrified by the difference in cost. Don't want to pay £100 for something which is actually worth a tenner. 🧐😭

I meant they can be slightly hit and miss like Shein - not that quality is like Shein. Just go for it but use your credit card.

I bought my wedding dress from there. I needed it shortened but took it to a seamstress. Was happy with it 😊 this was in lock down too.

ManchesterBea · 19/01/2024 12:25

Oh fab, yes see what you mean @Makeitmakesensetoday Smile

This sounds hopeful!

I’m a seamstress and have worked on hundreds of these dresses for bridesmaids. In my opinion they are of a good quality.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 19/01/2024 12:26

My daughter was happy with hers from there last year. The dress was decent quality for the price.

WhiteArsenic · 19/01/2024 12:27

I bought my mother of the bride dress from there. Was v cautious but they operate a try on policy so you can see the quality, and it was very good. I worried about the ethics etc, but I literally couldn’t find anything suitable anywhere else, even with quite a decent budget. Have to say I was very pleased overall.

Seeline · 19/01/2024 12:27

It's nothing like Shein!
My DD has had 2 prom dresses from there and both have been excellent quality.
They even make-to-measure if you want, but you can't return those.
The off-the-peg dresses are exactly the sizes given in the descriptions though.

When my friend got married we got our bridesmaid dresses from JJs. Amazing quality! A couple of years beforehand I'd been a bridesmaid but had a dress triple the price from a wedding boutique - I really can't see much difference in the quality at all.

ManchesterBea · 19/01/2024 12:29

Thanks so much for these, and I also worry about the ethics with the supercheap places, I'll dig into the background of JJ house, but quality wise it sounds like it's really going to be an option for me. I don't mind the try before you buy thing either, even though you have to pay for it, it saves going into a shop. They sometimes run an offer I think as well. Thanks for all this feedback, really positive on the whole!

My bridesmaids dresses were from here. 2015 so JJ's have been going for a fair while, not a random new pop up.

Positives - Excellent quality and beautifully made. Thick, beautiful, perfect fabric, stitching was immaculate, detailing out of this world. Colour spot on and accurate to photos. Fantastic price.

Problems - they got held at customs and I had to pay a fee to release them. Circa £90 I believe (for 4 dresses).
Sizing wasn't perfect. Two were two long, two too large (even though we followed their measuring instructions to the letter). So they had to be adjusted by a dressmaker.

However even with the customs and dressmaker fees, it still worked out a good bit cheaper than I'd have got from a UK shop. Just not the 'super cheap' bargain I'd originally thought it was.

Seeline · 19/01/2024 13:37

We've had super quick delivery each time and no customs charges either.

thecatsthecats · 19/01/2024 13:46

If you want an alternative try eshakti.com

It's a custom fitter from India - you can customise the design and fit of all sorts of clothing items. I've used them and the fit was perfect, great quality too.

pointythings · 19/01/2024 13:47

The threshold for customs charges has gone up a lot, which helps.

I bought 3 dresses on this site, they gave me a discount coupon and charged me a fortune for shipping. So far so good, but when I received the dresses, 1 was of terrible quality, it looked more like a nightgown, and the others were very heavy and extremely cheap, so I decided to return them. The company charged me an outrageous shipping fee and also deducted from my refund these shipping costs plus the coupon they had given me. Is it absurd to charge for a coupon given on the site? A real scam. In short, I ended up with a loss of $52 and without any dress. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SITE.
