I've got 2 kids, one school age and 1 still a young toddler. I just want a part time job to have a bit of money for myself as husband's money covers all bills etc but not an awful lot of treats.

I've been offered 2 jobs. One is Tuesday and Wednesday 8.30-5.30 with an hour break, contract and paid holidays. 2 weekends a year. I will come home with around £730 every month, youngest DC would need to go into childcare 1 day.

The other job is a zero hour and is every Sunday and Monday 10-5 ish. Holidays aren't paid but I would get holiday pay in my wage, meaning monthly I would probably come home with more money in my pocket. No childcare needed for this job. But it is every Sunday.

Which would you go for?

I'd take a receptionist over pub work any day. People can be very unpredictable when drinking.

When I worked behind a bar, I found people could be twats before they’d even had their first pint - then it’s all downhill from there…

Receptionist would be less stressful than pub, depending of course on how busy the switchboard is. This is a totally different option, Would you ever consider working from home? There are wfh jobs out there where you can do flexible shifts 9 to 5 or 5 to 9 each day and choose how many shifts p/w. I know one place that does that and they pay London Living wage no matter where you are based. (no, i'm not a recruiter, lol) My friend works for them though and it sounds good.

@BobbyBiscuits

could you please post or PM the details, if they might be recruiting for more people.

i need to get my bum in gear & start seriously looking as I'll be made redundant soon.

HalloumiGeller · 19/01/2024 23:08

Definitely the first one, I detest working on Sundays!!

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 19/01/2024 23:12

I'd take both

Tangled123 · 19/01/2024 23:14

Would you consider doing both?

I would pick receptionist over bar work, but I would prefer a zero hours contract over set weekdays if I wasn’t dependent on the money. You might not work every week if you take the second, so depends on if you see that as an advantage or not. Working Sunday wouldn’t bother me either.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 19/01/2024 23:16

@sapphiretoes

brry different jobs. Does one not appeal to you a lot more than the other. Different stages of my life they one would have appealed a lot more than the other.

what does your DP/DH think?

if it's only for 'pin' money, it doesn't really matter if you don't get all the shifts you want, but I'd imagine there would be a lot of pressure to do more shifts, cover others at short notice etc.Though you could probably work more evenings when DH is home.

with a young family, I'd hate working Sundays.

what did you do before you had the children & what's your plan?

the receptionist job would put you in the workforce properly, get your CV refreshed, update skills etc a lot more if you want that kind of work.

but pub work, not so much, but depending on the team/management, not necessarily.

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 19/01/2024 23:12

I'd take both

That’s what I’d do.

It doesn’t sound like either are really going to being much in that will make work worthwhile - unsure if you are entitled to any UC help with childcare etc but maybe look into it. Even both together still is just part time.

SueAndLionel · 19/01/2024 23:31

Receptionist.
A guaranteed income is better. You also might actually pick up extra days on reception doing holiday cover. One day a week in childcare could be good for your toddler for socialising. You get to keep your family weekends and time with your husband, which gets squeezed badly with two kids. If you'd like an office based career in the future, this will be better experience.
Do think about what are you going to do for school holidays and if your kids are sick in advance. But don't get too hung up on it. Kids grow, jobs change, you aren't signing up for life.

selfishmeow · 19/01/2024 23:37

The receptionist job as it will open more doors in the future for you when you no longer need childcare due to children growing up. Pubs and restaurants can be very unpredictable but if you can and need extra cash you can always do the receptionist job and take a Sunday shift in any pub/restaurant just for a day?

pizzaHeart · 19/01/2024 23:40

First one.
however you need to have a back up plan in case of sick child. It might not be needed much.

BobbyBiscuits · 20/01/2024 01:07

@WagWoofWalkMeeoow I just PM'd you. I've not done that before from here so if you can't see it let me know : )

coxesorangepippin · 20/01/2024 02:00

First one

determinedtomakethiswork · 20/01/2024 02:11

Definitely the first job. It's so much more secure and working as a receptionist will open doors for you in a way that working as bar staff won't.

thank you, both message & link were perfect!

sorry my reply is in so many bits. I keep hitting reply to get a new paragraph, but it sends it instead!! 🙇🏻‍♀️. Much preferred the old system!

How do they compare in things like NI and pension? Paid leave? Development opportunities?

BobbyBiscuits · 20/01/2024 23:42

@sapphiretoes I Pm'd you : )

hapoe · 20/01/2024 23:47

The first one, assuming your DH works Mon-Fri. Weekends are important family time for us and I'd hate to cut it in half.
