Would I be unreasonable to ask this company to replace my days wages?

I can’t tell if I’m irrationally annoyed so wanted to get some opinions before I speak to a manager tomorrow.

Quick story is I rent from a housing association who outsource repairs to a company and I’ve had no heating for 8 weeks. Had an appointment today to get everything fixed and slot for arrival was between 9-1. We have a rule of no A/L in January and unable to WFH so had to agree a days unpaid leave with my boss. Not ideal but I’m desperate for heating and this was the only appointment they could offer me. The house is freezing, black mould has developed because it’s that damp and cold and I’ve had a cold and chest infection for the last month. It gets to 2pm and no one’s tuned up so when I chase it up it transpires that something they need isn’t in stock or hasn’t been delivered so the work can’t be carried out. Except no one informed me so now I’ve lost a days work for no reason and the house is colder than ever because it’s like -5 outside. I’ve asked for a manager to call back which is going to be tomorrow but would I be unreasonable to ask them to replace my days wages? Moneys already tight enough without throwing away a days wage unnecessarily but I don’t know if I’m being OTT because I’m that cold and I just need to chalk it up to shoddy communication and just rebook the appointment!

I think you'd be on a hiding to nothing really.

HOWEVER, in your shoes I'd be kicking up a right stink and complaining and asking for the days wage (whether they give it or not is another matter)

I'd also write to your MP about it and get them to get onto your HA.

Edited to add: i think you need to complain to HA, because they're the ones who employed this company.

You can certainly ask, but I don’t think they will pay it to you. What you absolutely can and should insist on though, is that they come out to do the repair on a Sat/Sun (assuming you work a standard Mon-Fri) so you don’t have to take another day off work. And they need to do this either this weekend or next.

I doubt they will replace ur list income. It is disgusting that they didn't contact you. I would be requesting compensation. Hope u get things sorted OP

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 18/01/2024 21:02

If repairs aren't carried out within a reasonable time, our housing association will compensate you. It's not something they advertise though and you do need to request it. It could be worth asking, hopefully your housing association does the same

I think they should reimburse you but they won't. Could they pick keys up from you at work (or you post a spare set to them?) so they can let themselves in on their rescheduled date? That means you're just down one days money and not two. I had a lot of issues last year with my house and I ran out of AL to let in tradesman, they were actually pretty happy to work around me.

That is so annoying, OP SadFlowers

knightsinwhitesatin · 18/01/2024 21:07

Definitely try. Also 8 weeks without heating is completely unacceptable so complain your loudest to the HA, see if you can get any compensation.

I would ask, and also negotiate an appointment which fits around your work schedule
