To ask why there are sweeteners in nearly all soft drinks?

I've stopped drinking alcohol but would like a replacement drink to put in a wineglass.
Nearly every cordial or sparkling drink I've looked at contains sweeteners which I absolutely hate the taste of. The only thing I've found is Belvoir sparkling elderflower which is nice but pricy!
I would just mix my own with fizzy water if I could find a nice, not too sweet cordial. I thought about pure grape juice but my supermarket doesn't do it.
Wine

When sugar became unfashionable manufacturers substituted sweeteners so they could boast “Sugar free!!) on thenpacket

Unfortunately sweeteners are even worse for the body than sugar.

I don’t know why they won’t let us buy simple healthy food with more ease.

😔

Keepingthingsinteresting · 18/01/2024 22:38

Try Dalstons soda or if you are up to spending a bit more try Wilfred’s non alcoholic aperitif, it’s 😊

DelilahsHaven · 18/01/2024 22:44

Its really not helping with the obesity crisis unfortunately.

DelilahsHaven · 18/01/2024 22:47

People living with obesity are being penalised twice then, since artificial sweeteners are now recognised to contribute to weight gain.

Bibbetybobbity · 18/01/2024 22:49

Can’t recommend Dalston’s enough. So refreshing. Has entirely stopped me drinking alcohol at home too, the perfect evening drink. And no sugar or sweeteners.

RedSoloCup · 18/01/2024 22:52

Yes I hate this and it's partly to blame for my evening wine drinking!! Sains do some good high juice and also classic lemonade (look on the bottom shelf) both my go to plus fever tree or other premium tonic also normally fine

Essie274 · 18/01/2024 22:55

Cawston Press, Dalstons, and DASH water are my favourites. Dash being the least sweet, which is my preference, but also the least flavoursome (but again that is my preference anyway)

GRex · 18/01/2024 23:11

It's very annoying. We just have fizzy water with fruit juice mostly, though belvoir raspberry and lemon is nice. Ocean spray used to have one cranberry without sweetener, but I haven't seen it in while. I'll try the Lancashire ones to see if they will post.

Gymnopedie · 18/01/2024 23:25

Stevia is sneaky. It tastes nothing like sugar but it's natural. So manufacturers can stuff their products full of it and still proclaim no artificial sweeteners on their labels.

And to my dentist's disgust I refuse to use a mouthwash. Something else that's now got sweeteners in . I understand the logic of no sugar in a mouthwash but do they need sweetening?

mrsbyers · 18/01/2024 23:46

Asda still do proper sugar based squashes - just have to check the band on the label. M&S used to do similar but I’ve noticed sweetners creeping into their ‘normal’ squashes too. As others have mentioned Roses like cordial is safe and in the world food aisle you can get polish cordial in raspberry or sour cherry which is just sugar no sweetners

buckeejit · 19/01/2024 00:21

M&S high juice cranberry & raspberry is nice with fizzy water

badwolf82 · 19/01/2024 04:58

might have already been mentioned but can you get San Pellegrino where you are? They’re sparkling water + fruit juice and very refreshing. No artificial sweeteners or flavouring.

Copperoliverbear · 19/01/2024 05:23

I just drink water or squash. X

I thought this had sweeteners in it?

Copperolivebear; so many squashes have sweeteners in them now it's very difficult to pop to a supermarket and pick up a bottle of squash.

Yes I looked at the cranberry Ocean brand - couldn't see any at all without sweeteners Confused

What exactly is stevia?

Roses lime. Love that one

That sounds as though it would be nice and tangy and not too sweet.

Why do manufacturers think we ALL want sweet drinks! I haven't used sugar in my tea or coffee since I was about 12 (child of 80s).

That's the problem - there are so few squashes without sweetener at least in the supermarkets near me.

There are some sweeteners in it, but I drink the purple top Vimto - the NOT no added sugar/low sugar version... Its not as full of sugar as it used to be, but just enough I think. I can't stand the no added sugar version... Just doesn't taste right.
I try and avoid most sweeteners if I can help it.... They're worse than sugar for your body... Its all about moderation IMHO, not just saying sugar is bad and replacing it with chenicals. My DD ended up having bed wetting issues which more or less stopped over night when I completely cut out artificial sugar and sweeteners.

Yes moderation is the key!
Sweeteners make you crave more sweet stuff and not just drinks!

The acidic nature of fizzy drinks with sweeteners is still really bad for your teeth! Same for real fruit juice mixed with water and things like sipping lemon tea. You need to drink pure water afterwards to neutralise and brush teeth properly (though not directly after drinking the juice).

We drink a lot of Apple and Mango high juice cordial with soda stream fizzy water. Has to be Sainsbury's cordial. Other supermarkets have sweeteners in that flavour.

We also import real Orangina from France!

Phineyj · 19/01/2024 08:14

Also we use straws which is what the dentist recommended. We have those reusable metal ones.

Pashazade · 19/01/2024 08:24

Fever tree do more than just tonic now, their ginger beer is nice. Just sugar no sweetners and as someone else said Appletise is good too.
