Anyone experienced this as a woman in her twenties and is it bad?

Posting for traffic. 21 year old (no children) has noticed dimpling in her breast. Plus changes to a mole on her arm which is looking ragged and discoloured. She’s seeing gp tomorrow. Trying to reassure her it’s ok but privately freaking out that it is grade 4 inflammatory breast cancer. Does dimpling ever mean anything else? Only finding scary info online.

No experience with the breast dimpling, sorry, but didn't want to read and run - I have lots of moles. I've had loads that have suddenly gone weird, or weird new ones that have popped up. I always get them checked, and they've always been absolutely fine. A couple of them the dermatologist wanted to remove and biopsy to be safe, but again all of those came back totally benign in the end. (And I’m in my 20s like your daughter if that has any relevance to mole stuff)

So whilst it's always definitely very important to get them checked, don't panic and assume that it's a death sentence!

Hopefully the gp will be able to reassure rather than feel the need to refer.

What are benign reasons for breast dimpling?
Dimpling can also be a symptom of fat necrosis, a condition where the fatty tissue in the breast dies. It can happen for various reasons, including breast surgery, a bruise or injury, or as a side effect of a biopsy. There is no link between fat necrosis and breast cancer, but it can also cause a lump and dimpling.

It’s very unlikely that she has breast cancer at 21. Of course she should get it checked out, but it’s more than likely something non-sinister. When I was younger, my breasts would change a lot with hormonal fluctuations and even minor weight loss or gain, and I did have a bit of dimpling/bumpiness occasionally. So please try not to worry. It’s really good that she’s noticed and is savvy enough to get it checked though.

Same with the mole. Probably it’s fine! And if it isn’t, skin cancers are typically very easily treated with a small surgery and nothing more.

@Adventscam

She definitely needs to get a referral from her doctor to see a cancer specialist A.s.a.p,

just for sake of peace that is !

Bobbotgegrinch · 18/01/2024 14:33

She's doing the right thing by getting them checked out, but at 21 it's far more like to be something other than breast cancer, so I'd try not to worry too much.

Thank you everyone x

I have health anxiety, but even so, you're doing 2+2=5 and doctor google never helps!!

I had a mole that went black and scabbed over once but not had the breast changed. My sil had a lump which turned out to be a cyst.

ellie09 · 18/01/2024 16:07

I wouldnt be too scared of both until you see a GP and they give an opinion.

I also have a change in moles. Several have a white ring around them, losing their pigment, one looks particularly strange and I'm getting a skin biopsy next week.

The possibility of skin cancer has crossed my mind, but trying not to worry about it until professional advice is given to me and the sample is looked at

Please get a referral GPs don't know everything. It will be peace of mind for you all.
