Online classes

Sorry, wasn't quite sure where to post this so settled on AIBU as it is best for traffic.

Has anyone done any online classes and were they any good? Were they useful? Worth the money? Did you manage to make the time to do the course? Did you use the info from the course /change career based in your new knowledge or was it just for general interest?

I'm looking at the BBC Maestro online video courses, but wondering if I'll actually find the time for them or if it is a waste of money.

Can anyone recommend any other online courses? (Can't afford OU, but feel a need to try to stretch my brain as it is turning to mush over the last few years!) All subject recommendations welcome.

Thanks all x

The OU offers free courses - I think it is openlearn. Have you had a student loan previously?

I do a lot of online classes, the trick is to allocate weekly time to do them and practice the skills. I am mostly interested in art and design but am considering learning coding.
Whether they are relevant to change in career will depend on what requirements there are for your chosen career option. Some will need a degree, others will rely on portfolio building (data administration, coding, art and graphic design, animation etc.) and online courses are perfect for the latter.

Second the suggestion of having a look at free Open Learn courses offered by the Open University. Have a go at something you are interested in and see how you get on. Will give you a good idea whether or not online learning suits you.

For free or freeish courses, try edX

I have done some udemy courses, it depends on the person giving the course. But some of the courses are probably better than on person.

Also done some online one to one German lessons via Skype, which again is better due to flexibility.

Futurelearn is a good platform and some unis offer their own moocs.
