To ask about thick womb

Has anyone had any experience of this? Trying not to panic....
Had ultrasound after heavy periods and anaemia, she mentioned I had a 'coarse womb' but not much else, ovaries etc looked fine, no fibroids, said results would be with GP in a week.
Went home all fine, then googled... WHY!? All I can see is womb cancer.
Help me come out of my spiral!
I am due my period this weekend-is if that helps.

I had this and the diagnosis was adenomyosis

BoohooWoohoo · 18/01/2024 12:46

The ultrasound tech told me before the scan that I had been sent with suspected adenomyosis so it wasn’t a big shock when I got a letter with that diagnosis

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 12:49

Yeh mine didn’t say anything just mentioned ‘coarse womb’ I wish I could go back and ask what she meant

If your period is due the endometrium in the uterus will be thick.

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 13:21

I’m hoping this but they have no info just said to speak to gp in a week which sent my mind into overdrive - and the googling began

My report had uneven womb too.
As a result I had a hysteroscopy and biopsy.
I was prescribed the mini pill for the progesterone and had a Mirena put in as I had a hyperplasia.
At my following hysteroscopy, they didnt find any issues so it looks like the treatment helped but I’m having another hysteroscopy next month to check.

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 14:00

Yeh coarse means uneven not thick doesn’t it.

i have very heavy periods too. I’m 39

I had a ‘thickening of the womb’. I had three options - get, hysteroscopyes (to ministration), and hysterectomy.

Couldn’t have get due to type of breast cancer. I had a couple of hydtetoscopues, but I’m a wuss so could only cope with them under general. Decided after doing this twice (6 months apart) that I may as well go for the hysterectomy than having regular GAs.

it was done to prevent womb cancer which I had 10% chance of getting (if I recall correctly)

Riverlee · 18/01/2024 14:11

hrt not get

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 14:18

If it was cancer would they have seen a tumour?

If it was cancer would they have seen a tumour?

No. That's why a hysteroscopy is needed before confirming adenomyosis

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 14:47

Ah

I've had womb cancer. It's very treatable at early stages. The odds on it being that are low, so even if it is, it can be sorted. Try not to worry.

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 15:15

But I’ve had the heavy periods for a few years 😥

I realise I’m catastrophising

I had this but I’m much older than you. They suspected cancer. I had a hysteroscopy and biopsy. No cancer found which was a relief but now waiting for a hysterectomy as a precaution because I have a few gynae issues. A year wait time with NHS. I went private at first because I couldn’t get scanned or see a consultant on the NHS. Then fast tracked onto cancer pathway once I saw private consultant and had scans.

if the thickening is of a certain measurement it calls for you to be on the 2 week cancer investigation pathway. Yours could be pre period or only slightly thickening. But don’t panic. You’ve had scan that’s the main thing.

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 15:22

Thanks, that is helpful. Waiting for call from GP is the worst

I had really heavy painful periods every month and was diagnosed with a "bulky womb".
It did get worse after children and I had a hysterectomy in my early 30s. In fact they were unable to complete the procedure laproscopically because it was bulkier than initially expected 😃

Pushkinini · 18/01/2024 16:24

Four years ago I was you. I was a wreck. The waiting is the worst, but please be reassured that even if it is cancer, it is very curable. I had a hysterectomy, tubes and ovaries taken out less than two weeks after diagnosis and 4 years on, I'm fine.

It's far more likely to be something benign like hyperplasia (usually the recommend a Mirena coil to thin the womb lining), polyps, or just hormones.

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 16:29

Thank you. I actually had thyroid cancer in my 20s so i think I am a bit triggered

Thickened endometrium (lining): not necessarily an issue if you menstruate, depending on the time in the cycle, but should be checked out if you're post-menopausal e.g. by hysteroscopy (threading thin tube through cervix to look inside womb).

Heterogeneous myometrium (uneven texture in muscle layer) can indicate adenomyosis.

"Bulky" womb usually implies adenomyosis (or possibly fibroids).

Scottishmum1984 · 18/01/2024 17:04

I’m due a period of that means anything

That's when the lining will naturally be at its thickest
