See chart below.

Ovo are claiming our energy usage jumped 7x in on Dec 12th and stayed that high.

I have years worth of data to show we use around £2 a day, not 14.

They are claiming our house looks like it is using that much.

Has anyone had this issue before, we clearly aren't using that much energy!

Have you read your meter?

Snowydaysfaraway · 18/01/2024 12:19

Big American fridge and someone has knocked the thermostat? Apparently our fridge costs is a fortune according to Octopus.

MikeRafone · 18/01/2024 12:22

what do your meter readings state?
do you photograph your meters once a month?

what was your reading on 31/12 before the price increase?

Dotjones · 18/01/2024 12:23

Turn everything off then watch the meter to see if it still moves. If it does, either you've not unplugged everything or there is a fault. If it doesn't move, add appliances back in one at a time to see what causes a sudden huge jump.

Dotjones · 18/01/2024 12:24

Also if you flip the display to kWh instead of £ does it show a corresponding jump?

HomeTheatreSystem · 18/01/2024 12:25

You need to look at your kW per hour usage rather than £ . Looks like you have an IHD and smart meter. Can you check your avg daily kW per hour usage hasn't changed?

I ask because my supplier gave me a different (higher) cost per kWh than was actually the case for my tariff. This would have led to huge variance between what I actually owed versus what they thought I owed.

BreakingAndBroke · 18/01/2024 12:27

Has your rate gone up? Is it the usage or the cost that has gone up so much?

bookmediary · 18/01/2024 12:34

Exactly what @Dotjones said, something is eating your supply usually something faulty that hasn't tripped the fuse. I used to work for an energy company and this is the exact advice we would give. It will be a pain to get to every plug but worth it. Check your immersion heater hasn't been switched on accidently.

When you start turning stuff back on start with the kitchen.

Yes done that and we have a smart meter, the readings look correct. It reads it every 30m.

Sorry, we don't have that. We didn't bring any appliances into the house and the only thing we had on extra were some Christmas tree lights.

I can't see the reading from the 31st but it says we spent £13.61 and then on the 1st £13:49, kWh looking similar.

Yes, it looks like our KWH have jumped too.

It has gone up- but not 7x the price, and that was from 31st Dec, not the 13th.

Well- next door do have a huge model railway up there, but not a cannabis farm that I'm aware of. A pair of retired doctors, so I would be very surprised 🤣

Assuming you didn't have a price fix that ended on the 13th I would imagine there is a faulty appliance somewhere drawing a lot more power.

You can get devices that you plug an appliance into and it will show the energy consumption, they don't cost much. It may be worth getting one and testing out everything.

BarbieGirl999 · 18/01/2024 13:07

You never know!!!

Could someone have accessed your electricity?

Itslegitimatesalvage · 18/01/2024 13:09

I had this. My chest freezer had a fault and was using crazy amount. Got rid of it and all went back to normal. You have to start eliminating appliances to see what it could be. That’s the first step.

UnbeatenMum · 18/01/2024 13:12

Immersion heater switched on by accident? If you've ruled out all your appliances and it hasn't gone back down after packing Christmas decorations away then it could be a faulty meter.

Yes no price fix. And usage is up too. I will look into that. Ta.

Unlikely, we have Ring cameras covering the outside and back.

We do have another chest freezer in the pantry. It may have been switched on around then in prep for Christmas Grin

hedgehoglurker · 18/01/2024 13:31

Yep, check everything that cools or heats. Electric underfloor heating, immersion water heater, faulty fridges and freezers are some of the most common ones that eat electricity.

My bill for December was £571 (£350 gas, £221 electricity), so it may not be impossible if you also have a fairly large property, big family, and had guests for Christmas so used lots of extra electricity cooking, the guests shower is electric, etc. We have solar panels too, so I dread to think how much it would have been without them!

Oh dear, you could have got a new one with the amount spent on the extra electric, get it switched off quickly!!

Nonimai · 18/01/2024 13:50

£2 a day was very low. £60 a month? We pay around £280 a month without any heating or water heating, so that’s for washer, oven ( not hob),dishwasher, microwave, tv and peripherals, home office inc 2 workstations plus printers etc, sonsgaming computer, displays etc. Then the general hairdryers, chargers, hoover. 4 of us.
