Swimming lesson in this weather

DD is year 4 & they have swimming lessons at sch on Thursdays. It is -5 degrees here today. Should these kids be swimming today? Or am I just an over protective mother?

They aren't swimming outside are they? Then why would it be a problem?

Mazuslongtoenail · 18/01/2024 10:34

If it’s indoor swimming and changing and they aren’t walking back to home / school with wet hair I don’t see why the weather makes any difference.

Icepop79 · 18/01/2024 10:34

I'm assuming they’re not swimming in an unheated outdoor pool??
If their lessons are in an ordinary swimming pool, why on earth would they cancel them?

Moreorlessmentallystable · 18/01/2024 10:34

Are the swimming lessons outdoors?

mightydolphin · 18/01/2024 10:35

Well, assuming that it isn't some sort of crazy outdoor swimming school then why not? They're heated and usually have hairdryers available to use on wet hair after.

FictionalCharacter · 18/01/2024 10:36

Yep, you’re being overprotective! Kids have been going to swimming lessons in cold winters since forever.

Icepop79 · 18/01/2024 10:36

If it helps, I’ve just swum in a heated outdoor pool and it was absolutely glorious.

EmailAddress · 18/01/2024 10:36

As long as they crack the ice first on the lake they should be ok.

dontwantbenefitbutforcedtonoworksuitable · 18/01/2024 10:37

Someone was just telling they have turned down the temperature of the pool but I know they wouldn't make the pool unbearably cold for users

... and don't forget to pack a wetsuit & drt robe!

Honestly, they will be fine.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 18/01/2024 10:38
  • dry robe
CaineRaine · 18/01/2024 10:39

It’ll be fine, unless they’re swimming outside 🥶

😂

Assuming it's inside, I would treat it like any other day.

InWestPhiladelphia · 18/01/2024 10:41

Sorry OP this is massively over protective! And a bit mad! I might remind my kids to wear a hat outside at lunchtime if they have wet hair but no I wouldn't worry about an indoor activity at school when it's a bit cold outside.

LostMySocks · 18/01/2024 10:44

My cousin talks of breaking the ice to go swimming in his outdoor pool at prep school but he is retired so it was many moons ago and before people had central heating

Flatulence · 18/01/2024 10:48

If the pool is indoors then YABU. Why would they cancel a lesson in a heated indoor pool just because it's a bit colder than normal?
So long as the kids can dry off properly after the lesson before heading out into the cold then it's fine.

NicholJO · 18/01/2024 10:51

Hi op same here my 9 year old had swimming on Tuesday it was -6 they walk just over a mile to the swimming baths then walk back school my son as mild autism he don't understand dry yourself properly do coat up put hat on I personally think it's way to cold

IamnotSethRogan · 18/01/2024 10:51

I prefer the kids swimming lessons in the winter because the viewing area is so unbelievably warm. The changing rooms are warn as well so unless your pool is different I can't see a problem.

WandaWonder · 18/01/2024 10:52

Swimming in the North Sea?

GintyMcGinty · 18/01/2024 10:53

I took my DS to his swimming club last night. Temp on the car said it was -7C when I dropped him off and -11C when I picked him up.

He was fine and had a great nights sleep afterwards.

AlisonWonderbra · 18/01/2024 10:54

We went swimming yesterday and it was actually too bloody hot in the changing room.

Megifer · 18/01/2024 11:00

Kids need stuff like this - building resilience etc - to avoid what Im currently getting a lot of right now which is "do we have to come into the office today because its cold?". Yes, yes you do, stick a jumper on fgs 🤣

SnapdragonToadflax · 18/01/2024 11:00

If it's an indoor pool I can't work out why you'd be concerned at all.

If it's outdoor, I would presume it's heated? We had an outdoor pool at my school in my 80s and it was lovely on cold days, you could see the steam rising off it.

Unheated outdoor pool, well yes perhaps you have a point.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/01/2024 11:05

Assuming it’s an indoor heated pool yabu

if they are going open water swimming Yanbu

brainworms · 18/01/2024 11:09
