AIBU to worry about how I'm going to get off my drive? - diagram

There are currently roadworks on my lane which have been an absolute PITA with very little notice. The lane is narrow as it is and with the way they have been setting up barriers around the trenches they have dug in the asphalt its leaving extremely narrow spaces for cars to get past. There is one part of the lane where cars are regularly mounting the curb as to not drive into the barriers.

I have found as I returned home today they have (with no prior notice) dug trenches along the front of my property wall including running in front of my drive, they have put up barriers narrowing my drive as seen in the diagram and they have put a metal sheet/platform over the trench to allow us access on and off, however as I went to drive in I have noticed how extremely narrow this is. I struggled to get onto my drive due to how narrow it all is and have already nicked a barrier going in today and had to attempt it 3 times. Tomorrow I am going to have to pull out of my drive and turn right and with how very narrow the passageway between the barriers and the stone wall of my neighbors property is I don't know if it's possible as there is no room for any type of maneuvering to even pull forward reverse a bit and attempt to slowly inch out. I feel like with how narrow the space to pull out into is in order to get out I would essentially have to be able to turn my car at a 90 angle with no room at the front to swing it around to such.
It does not help my mind that I know in the morning the lane will be packed with workmen and I will inevitably make a fool of myself.
I can't emphasize enough how narrow the pathway for cars is so I am really worried about being able to do this.

Excellent diagram 10/10

Agree no help but brilliant diagram. Top 3

Hercisback · 17/01/2024 21:53

Reverse onto your drive and edge out slowly.

ShoePalaver · 17/01/2024 21:53

get one of the workmen to move your car?

Loulovescake · 17/01/2024 21:53

Sounds very stressful! I doubt I would get out. Could you do it before the workmen arrive and park your car down the road?

NewYearNewPyjamas · 17/01/2024 21:54

I'd speak to the work men in the morning and ask for a wider gap between barriers and more platform.

Great diagram. Great example of rule keeping too. Phenomenal.

TinyRebel · 17/01/2024 21:54

I always find it easier too reverse into my driveway so I can come out forwards - but I actually think you’d be better off reversing out with this set up. Can you just move the barriers a bit?

fedupandstuck · 17/01/2024 22:04

When we had similar we spoke to the workmen each morning and they would move barriers temporarily and wave us out. They were very helpful.

Somatosensational · 17/01/2024 22:08

You need to ask your neighbour to move their wall

Harrietsaunt · 17/01/2024 22:09

I’m assuming moving the barriers won’t help as there’s a trench and OP just has the metal ramp to drive off? If not, yes, move the barriers.

Alternatively, I would turn left out of my driveway, where the lane is wider, and just go the long way round to wherever I am going.

If the situation is ongoing just park somewhere else until the work is completed.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 17/01/2024 22:12

The workmen can move the barriers and put down extra plating over the trench to give you the necessary extra turning room.
Just ask!!!! , they are usually very nice, polite and extremely helpful. (Well they have been when I’ve found myself in a similar situation😊)

Drosera · 17/01/2024 22:15

Reversing out will make it easier to turn sharply but a bit harder to get into drive as you'll be driving in forwards. I'd still try.

saraclara · 17/01/2024 22:19

My daughter had this. And I had to deal with it when I visited. But the workmen were really helpful and removed the barriers (and in your case will almost certainly move the metal sheets).

NewName24 · 17/01/2024 22:21

Excellent diagram, tbf

If you aren't going out until after the work crew are there, then ask them if they can squidge the barrier over a couple of inches, and manage the traffic so you can get off your drive.

Also, if it is easier, turn left and drive a slightly longer route ???

DaughterNo2 · 17/01/2024 22:23

Have you driven in, rather than reversing?

Poppyseed14 · 17/01/2024 22:25

I applaud your magnificent diagram OP!

I'd have to stay at home until the works were finished 😬

AdoraBell · 17/01/2024 22:25

Definitely reverse onto the driveway and speak to the boss tomorrow about it.

10/10 for the diagram 👍

AlisonDonut · 17/01/2024 22:26

I'd probably have parked in another road for the night.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 17/01/2024 22:31

As others have said, ask them to move the barriers and watch you out.

Absolutely brilliant diagram. Do you have to create them as part of your job?

Pinkyponker · 17/01/2024 22:38

I'm terrible at maneuvering so I'd have to call in sick....😬

snoopyfanaccountant · 17/01/2024 22:41

We had this situation many years ago in a previous home. Scottish Water dug up the road and we had to park our cars somewhere nearby.

MaggieFS · 17/01/2024 22:44

Tremendous diagram.

Try once, and if you can't do it, hop out and just ask them to move the barriers slightly.

Don't worry about mentioning lack of notice, being apologetic or anything else. Just factually, politely and simply ask that they quickly move them so you can get out.

OhwhyOY · 17/01/2024 23:02

Ask workmen to move barriers and/or turn left out of your drive and turn round somewhere else. Also it could always be worse....

underneaththeash · 17/01/2024 23:07

Just move the barriers yourself.

sparklins · 17/01/2024 23:14

Thank you for approving my diagram 😁
I would go left if I could as it's actually the shorter route (and the barriers seem fractionally better positioned) however its completely closed off through the day, so not only do I have to try and maneuver out of the drive I also have to go the very long way down a winding one vehicle wide country road.

I don't think the barriers can be moved as there is soil and whatever else they dug out of the trenches piled there, if they just put the barriers by the trenches it would be perfectly fine but the soil is in the way.
I did move a traffic cone earlier as there was no way I was getting on the drive with it there.
To PPs who mentioned I drove onto the drive straight on, I always reverse on but there is no room to swing the front of my car enough to maneuver it onto the drive reversing. I ended up doing a 10 point turn on my drive to face my car down towards the exit... luckily its a bit wider in one spot and I only had to damage my lawn a little bit.
