bit obscure but cld you talk to me about your interior doors?

I'm looking for inspiration for interior doors and door handles. Googling of interiors and doors hasn't got me anywhere.

There seems to be a fashion for cross and bible type panel doors in white. I don't mind the look of them but I don't want panels with "ledges' because they will collect dust. Which then leaves a flat door - which is a bit boring. I also dont like vertical grooved doors because they make me think of farm houses.

I don't want anything with glass in for safety.

I don't like round ball handles or those curvy lever ones, I don't mind a straight hand but it's hard to find a nice one that doesn't look like an office.

Totally drawing a blank. Does a stylish flat or non-dust collecting ledged door exist?

Anyone done interior door selection or replacement recently? Any ideas? Comments on wood or painted white? Any mistakes you've learnt lessons from?

I can't seem to find anything I like...

We have the doors linked to above from Howdens. They come unfinished so you can paint them if you want. We chose to have them oiled. We also have some in the glass version. We have different handles depending on whether it is a cupboard or room door. They don't collect dust at all that I have noticed.

Are the doors original to the house? If so it would be a shame to replace them with some generic modern doors IMO.

We have original panelled interior doors with bevels rather than flat ledges. When we moved in they’d been stripped as was the fashion but we had them repainted in an off white eggshell and replaces all the handles with brushed steel. They look smart and appropriate to the property.

I can’t say the dust is an issue since it had never occurred to me until I read this post 🤣

Mytholmroyd · 19/01/2024 13:49

This is my favourite door in our house but we do live in a barn, I love glass door knobs which reflect the light - have all sorts of different ones plus my dogs can easily open lever handles, it's got glass in it and it's panelled oak. So all the things you don't want OP sorry!

I cannot think of anything to suggest - I have a very traditional view of doors I think!

It does very much depend on your house tbh. Ours is a Victorian terraced townhouse and it's painted white throughout with darkish wood flooring. Pops of colour from art / cushions / throws. When we moved in I was convinced I wanted to change every door to match and be a bit more modern. On advice from a friend we went to a reclamation yard and our handyman replaced every (horrible hollow white 'standard') door with reclaimed solid wood ones. They are all slightly different colours / styles but all have simple brushed chrome round knobs on. They have lots of imperfections but as a whole it just works for our house

thinslicedham · 19/01/2024 14:16

We have the six-panelled doors, and yes, the ledges do gradually accumulate dust, but it's not difficult to wipe them clean when you dust a room. I rarely bother, tbh. It's not very visible unless you're going around the house doing a dust inspection, and life's too short to fuss about a little dust.

shams05 · 19/01/2024 14:41

Check out Wayfair online, they have lots of choice of doors
We have the two glass panels ones downstairs with fire safety glass and cottage style upstairs in white, the upstairs ones need a regular dusting, you're right in that they gather dust in the lower groove

AliceThruTheDoor · 19/01/2024 19:06

Thank you to everyone - I'm so glad you replied some lovely doors here.

@NotMeNoNo I like that but my life is blighted by dusting!
@CMOTDibbler wow! I love that door. It's perfect. It's stylish, different, visually interesting and ledge-dust free! I will have a look at that.

@ApolloandDaphne also nice although I'm not keen on the glass one.

@Mytholmroyd that is also quite a wow door. I really like it but it wouldn' fit in our house at all but it is beautiful. Did you get the stain glass commissioned or was it part of an 'off the shelf door'? where is it from?

Yes they are. Hmmm. I hadn't really thought about that aspect actually. They are quite retro-generic if that makes sense. They are the cheap plywood door equivalent of their day!

Unfortunately there is a regular visitor here who almost does a white glove test every time. I don't like dust but I like even less being given a hard time about it. Life is to short for confrontation about that.

We have original to the house 1930s solid wood doors: rectangle above three vertical panels. All the panels are bevelled as is pretty much all the woodwork in our house (plate rails, picture rails, panelling, bevelled wooden windows etc etc) and I don’t notice an accumulation of dust! I just use a feather duster weekly and do the doors when I remember!

DilemmaDelilah · 19/01/2024 21:21

I have (and like) 4 panel doors with the top 2 panels being obscured safety glass so I can't help you with your door choices. However I was very fussy about my door handles. I am very risk averse and on blood thinners, so I wanted lever door handles with no sharp corners or edges and found these Sorrento Donna handles which are curved and lovely

@AliceThruTheDoor Thank you! The door was made to order as it's an odd size to fit what was originally an external door. But it's not stained glass! I wanted it but it was too expensive so I got 'stickers' from here:
https://www.e-peels.co.uk/

Absolutely brilliant! Huge choice of designs and effects and very reasonably priced and they just go on with a bit of washing up liquid so easy to remove and change. You can't tell it's not stained glass - fools everyone!

@DilemmaDelilah those are lovely door handles for the reason you give. I can tell that was a lot of research! Thank you.

@Mytholmroyd I am amazed that is a sticker. Honestly. it looks great. was it tricky to apply. I bet if I did it, I'd end up with a big air bubble!
It wouldn't fit here but I think that it looks fabulous.

Have a look at XL Joinery doors online, they have loads of styles to choose from

Mytholmroyd · 20/01/2024 13:11

No not difficult to apply at all - you can slide it around a bit too until you have it in the right place - and it was from memory only about 60 pounds for the two.

It has an 'old glass' effect in the clear bits too and raised on the lead lines so it looks real. Been up a couple of years now and still securely in place. We had to cut it to size for a perfect fit but that was easy to do.

They do lots of different styles - modern ones as well as the art deco/nouveau ones and ones that are colourless. And they make them to order if you wanted house number/name etc.

Mytholmroyd · 20/01/2024 13:20

For the exterior doors that had to have lever handles to work the locking mechanism we got them from here:

https://www.fromtheanvil.co.uk/ironmongery/door-furniture/lever-handles

Very happy with them but I also like the smooth ones @DilemmaDelilah has

Is your photograph from the 'applied' side? how does it look on the reverse side?

OP posts:
Mytholmroyd · 20/01/2024 20:18

It was - this is the other side but not as easy to photograph at night - it looks identical though colour-wise.

Look at Todd's doors. They have a good selection and some really nice handles.
