To think dogs might not mind a couple of days chilling at home too

We have an almost 11 year old wonderful dog, she’s young at heart and still has a good amount of energy, her back legs get sore if she runs/swims too much, so can’t run after the ball hundreds of times, like she did when younger. In recent weeks, she’s been out with us everyday for long walks…trips to the beach to chase the ball and swim in a nearby lake, 2 hr walks in the woods etc. The last couple of days have been storms and lots of wind and rain, plus we’ve all been quite fluey, so I’ve been just dropping Dd at school then coming home and staying in, my lovely dog has been lay beside me on the sofa with a blanket and the fire on, she’s been sleeping for two days all day really and quite happy.
Took her out today after school with Dd with our wellies on and Ddog got a good run around, I saw one of the neighbours walking her dogs, we had small talk about the recent weather and I said that it was the first time out in a couple of days for Ddog, she was shocked and said does she not go out everyday, I said usually, but occasionally she’ll stay in
Aibu a mean dog owner??

I have to practically drag mine out when the weather is bad, he's 13 now. If it wasn't for the toilet issue I would happily keep him all warm and snuggly.

Not so much when he was younger though, he would have destroyed the house!

I have a very high energy working breed. Even he enjoys an occasional day chilling at home if he’s had a particularly busy few days. Plenty of enrichment can be done indoors too.

HappyHamsters · 17/01/2024 16:43

Who wants to go out in the wind and rain (apart from my cat), it's no different to no long walks in the heat. Have you got a garden and presumably somewhere to toilet. Sounds divine snuggling up in front of the fire.

Pinkyponker · 17/01/2024 16:44

My dogs are 3 and 2 and don't go out every single day. They're perfectly happy to skip a day.

But they have lots of company pretty much every day so I probably would feel guiltier if they were left along during the day and they didn't get walked.

Elphame · 17/01/2024 16:44

Not a chance

Whatever the weather, my two are queuing at the front door if they think the daily walks are being forgotten!

Donkeysdontdance · 17/01/2024 16:45

I’m guessing not a collie 😁

*Aibu and am a mean dog owner ..that meant!

If your dog wasn't happy I'm sure you'd know! My old boy would have been decidedly miffed if we'd tried to make him walk in all weathers.

Notthatcatagain · 17/01/2024 16:49

If we tell our old boy that we are going shopping, he's up the stairs and on the bed before we can fasten our coats. Reappears when we get home.

CMOTDibbler · 17/01/2024 16:50

Mine have no interest in being outside in rain, wind or too cold and are very happy to just chill out.

Needanewphonenow · 17/01/2024 16:53

She can go in the front and back garden and does her poos in the back garden. She’s rarely on her own in the house as Dh and I work around Dd and school etc
She often just nips upstairs to lie down 😂
She does love her walks/runs though

We have to accept what one of our dogs wants on some days - which is to refuse to move from her bed. Shes an active girl (vizsla) but also as lazy as a sloth at times. If it's too early or windy, she does not co operate! Fair enough, I say!

mumto2teenagers · 17/01/2024 16:56

It sounds like your dog gets plenty of exercise, no harm in having a couple of days chilling.

We have 2 dogs, they are usually walked everyday, but sometimes, especially if it is too hot for them or raining they will stay in. The older one is 11 and doesn't enjoy the rain, she would much rather be chilling on the sofa than getting wet on a walk.

wetotter · 17/01/2024 16:56

DDog sometimes has days when she really doesn't want to go out in bad weather, and seems perfectly happy drooping round at home; occasionally inspecting the weather from the doorstep, giving a disgusted look and returning to the sofa.

2jacqi · 17/01/2024 17:04

@Needanewphonenow i had a dog who refused to go out in the bucketing rain! she turned round and put her rear legs on the back step and wee'd down the step!!!!!

My old dachshund was truly excellent at the high speed reverse. If chucked out for a wee he'd go under the garden table, standing with his head turned back to deliver filthy resentful looks.

tadpolelove · 17/01/2024 17:17

Mine haven't been walked in weeks, they haven't died lol

Needanewphonenow · 17/01/2024 17:34

@tadpolelove Weeks?

Yep way before Xmas, 1 is a cocker spaniel and two cockapoos. They are outside dogs though so that probably helps.

pilates · 17/01/2024 17:44

Sounds perfectly fine to me

FourLeggedBuckers · 17/01/2024 17:45

If you live alone with dogs, it’s inevitable that there will be occasional days when it’s just not possible to walk them much, although that should very much be a minority event.

I don’t think poor weather is an excuse not to walk them though.

CuriousMoe · 17/01/2024 17:57

Ours is only 18 months old. He stays at my in-laws occasionally who have two of their own dogs and run around like crazy together. When we pick him up he’ll go straight to the bedroom and go to sleep and has no interest in a walk the next day because he’s utterly knackered!
We now just take a day off walks the day after he’s at “Nana and Grandad’s” so he can rest.

Man dogs would beg to differ!Grin

Atethehalloweenchocs · 17/01/2024 18:23

We dont go out every day, now that I have an older dog and a low energy younger dog. We go most days, but have skipped a few when I dont feel well, and they have been fine. They are very happy to get out when we do go again.

Dogs need walks, stimulation and exercise whether they live in or out. Obviously.
