Ds just turned 15 months. He can’t even stand without holding onto something and needs something to grab to even pull himself up. He will slide along furniture and stand up holding rails in his cot but that’s it. I am worried this means he is developmentally delayed? Will he be less bright than most children? He’s my first and I’m worried , no other friends with dc to chat to about it

My eldest was 21 months, docs were just starting to show interest - definately nothi g to worry about at 15 months. If he's weight bearing though (standing a cot bars) his hips etc are ok. He'll get there.

The first few years are stressful OP. Try not to worry and just enjoy!

A lot of people think babies should be walking by 12 months when in fact before 12 months is early (and not always ideal because they can be very wobbly). Anything between 12-18 months is totally normal.

It's not walking that's the issue at 15 months but it does sound like he can weight bear? If you hold him standing does he put his feet down? My ds2 wasn't weight bearing at all at 1, if I held him standing up he'd just lift up his feet. He wasn't doing anything like your DS is doing. we were referred to physio who checked for a number of things like muscular dystrophy but they just kept an eye on him as he progressed. He was hypermobile which affected his stability - I think it was 18 months before he could stand up with support. He bum shuffled and eventually walked at 23 months. You wouldn't know now, he is a happy little boy in year 1.

Dd has two degrees and was a late walker don't count them out just yet

The health visitor will ask you if you keep everything they want within reach at all times like drink food and toys if the answer to that is yes then ask yourself where is the motivation to move?

ReadingSoManyThreads · 16/01/2024 22:55

I wouldn't be concerned unless there were other worries on development.

Both of mine were late walkers, later than that, and my husband/their dad apparently was a lazy shit when he was a baby and didn't walk until REALLY late. He just lay there like a sausage apparently. No development issues with him and he became an athlete!

inappropriateraspberry · 16/01/2024 22:55

Mine were both 18 months before they took their first steps unaided. I wouldn't worry!

writingmylifeaway · 16/01/2024 23:04

Mine was 18m when he took his first steps.

sammyjoanne · 16/01/2024 23:07

Mine didnt walk until she was 22 months. They took her for tests afterwards saying she was dispraxic but after several tests they said theres nothing wrong and had great cognitive and co-ordination. Shes now 22 years old.

Noseybookworm · 16/01/2024 23:09

He's in the normal range, some children are late walkers. Is he crawling? My youngest was a bum shuffler and never crawled and he walked later than his 4 older brothers who were all walking before a year. It made no difference in the long run. Have a word with your health visitor, I'm sure she can put your mind at rest.

Growlybear83 · 16/01/2024 23:12

My daughter didn't show any signs of walking until she was 16 months, then one day she just stood up and walked across the room without any help. She never went through the stage of being really wobbly and falling over - she just went from crawling to very proficient walking instantly. I wasn't worried that she was a bit late walking, and she did everything in her own time during her early years.

Bbq1 · 16/01/2024 23:24

Don't worry, Op. My ds didn't walk independently until he was 17 months. Very bright though, he was talking and having conversations by the time he was 1. Walking has no bearing Whatsoever on a child's ability. He took off at 17 months and went on to do loads of sporty activities throughout his childhood and at 18, goes to the gym most days!

nildesparandum · 16/01/2024 23:43

My DS1 walked at 15 months, but DS2 was 21 months before walking. He was a very fast crawler though.
His two youngest children were like him ,late walkers. They were both almost 2 years old.
My brother , according to my mother ,was walking at 10 months.Myself and my sisters were all walking just after our first birthdays.

Echoing everyone else here, I wouldn't be too concerned, but if you are, chat to your HV. They all develop at different paces. Some like crawling and find it faster, some babies are larger (but healthy) and it is literally harder for their muscles to grow to support them, some are just focused on other things like talking/playing. My youngest walked fast, but he is 17 months now and only has two "words" and by that I am being generous, as they are more like sounds than words. He is so far behind his sister verbally it is strange to see, but he is developing quicker physically. I think they all get there in their own time. Milestones are honestly detrimental in some ways.

Coyoacan · 17/01/2024 00:44

She is probably an exception, but a friend of mine is exceptionally intelligent and didn't walk until she was two.

2mummies1baby · 17/01/2024 07:40

Reading this with interest, as I have a 13 month old who doesn't crawl, bum shuffle or walk- the responses are making me feel a lot better!
