Broken down car left outside my house.

We have a drive, so that's ok for now, but when my son comes home on leave from the forces we would like to park outside my own home and let him park in the drive. Most of my neighbours have 2 or 3 cars so parking is at a premium. The car is an old one and the last time I saw the owner - about 2 weeks ago he said it needed a new timing belt which is an expensive repair. Not seen anyone near the car since - really frustrating AIBU to want to report the police ??

Your son will just have to get steering and pedal locks then.

I get what you're all saying - anyone can park there - I get it - But I don't know who the owner is - just met him once, and with it being an expensive repair I think he's just left is - as you all say rightfully parked - just VERY inconvenient for everyone - I think I just wanted to vent here.

Well it's not inconvenient for the guy that parked it.

My guess is that he isn't particularly happy about having to shell out for a new timing belt.

This sort of stuff happens unfortunately. The only way round it is to make your drive bigger if you can so you can fit two cars on it.

Cheers op. Much needed laugh this afternoon 😂

If he's got a range rover probably the further he parks it away from his keys the better.

Haydenn · 16/01/2024 15:41

It’s not very inconvenient for EVERYONE, it is a little inconvenient for your son who isn’t even home at the moment. If you want to park right outside your house buy a house with a bigger driveway.

I am sure it is - just wish I knew who he/she is.

Why would you report the car to the police? The owner has as much right to park on the highway as anyone else does.

Because the police have plenty of time on their hands and really enjoy running around solving petty parking disputes.

What they really enjoy though is when you phone them up and ask them to move a legally parked car, you should remind them that as a taxpayer you pay their wages.

kisstheblarney · 16/01/2024 15:44

You park your car down the road and your son park in your drive so he can constantly monitor his car.

Allfur · 16/01/2024 15:44

Can't your son get a normal car that doesn't need to be guarded, ir maybe his own house with a garage

Allfur · 16/01/2024 15:45

*or

Paw2024 · 16/01/2024 15:46

Make sure he's had the security update done on his car (check with dealership if he hasn't had a letter)

GasPanic · 16/01/2024 15:46

You can check online whether it is properly taxed/insured.

Other than that you are probably stuck, my guess is if it is not someone who lives in the road someone will know him if he was their visitor for example. But even if you talk to him I don't see why he would move it, and he may actually not be able to. After all the engine is probably wrecked so the best thing he could do is probably push it so it is in front of someone elses house instead. You'll just have to park somewhere else.

He's got a high spec range rover and thefts of these are really high in my area - we usually let him park it up the drive and I park across our drive to keep it more secure at night.

Unless the broken down car is blocking your drive why can't you still do this?
He parks his fancy car in the drive and you block him in

Dramasloth · 16/01/2024 15:51

Interesting. We have a vehicle dumped in our residents parking bays. I’ve looked online and it’s untaxed. Can action be taken??

Surroundedbyfools · 16/01/2024 15:52

If it’s taxed and insured they have as Much right to leave it there as u do. You don’t have the monopoly on the road outside ur home. Park ur car further up the street. Maybe he can’t afford to get it fixed or moved just now.

MrsMarzetti · 16/01/2024 16:08

You don't own the road outside of your house. Your Son can walk a couple of hundred yards can't he ? After all he won't have a parking place outside his accommodation block.

That won't stop it being stolen, thieves have ways. Someone in my road has had two stolen from their drive, not both at the same time, but about a year apart. Everyone here is very aware but if someone wants it, they will get it, all you can do is make it difficult.

TinkerTiger · 16/01/2024 16:16

Don't get the mention of your son being armed forces. Is he more worthy of the space outside because of it?

PonkyPonky · 16/01/2024 16:16

Had a car outside my house for 6 weeks recently, no idea whose it was just had to put up with it. Until some workmen had to dig up the road. I have no idea how they tracked down the owner as it wasn’t even someone who lives here but they told them it didn’t work and they would try and get it moved. It delayed the works but they got there in the end. Unless your road needs digging up, they have no responsibility to move it. Had a van broken down outside my house for 3 months last year. It’s annoying as no one has a drive here so the road parking is highly sought after! There is no law being broken and you don’t own the road so you just have to put up with it.

AnneValentine · 16/01/2024 16:35

Feel free to report. They will tell you to go away.

Imnotlikethem · 16/01/2024 16:40

My timing belt going has just cost me 4.5 k in total and that’s without it being towed if not covered so maybe he is taking time to raise the funds . Totally understanding how frustrating it is .

So where’s the issue? Your son on the drive, you blocking his high spec Range Rover in by parking over your drive and the car in front of your house. When your son is not there you park on the drive. This sounds like a non issue tbh
