To be pissed off that my did not get prescribed anti biotics

My son has a hearing impairment mainly caused by glue ear and a tiny bit caused tissue scaring. He has hearing aids and a history of bad ear infections.

Last Friday the doctor refused to prescribe anti biotics for an ear infection. He had not had the ear infection for long enough. Today his ear perforated. He is complaining that he can hear very little in the perforated ear.

He can't use his hearing aids because of the copious gunk coming out of his ear. I also suspect that the pattern of frequencies he will be able to hear has totally changed. Apparently it is too painful to wear his hearing aids. (Both ears hurt)

What I don't understand is why his hearing is worst rather than better. I would have expected that a perforation would have a similar effect to a grommet.

I am not in favour of anti biotics being given out like smarties. It results in resistant bateria. Also many ear infections are caused by viruses.

Surely a child who already has hearing loss needs ear infections treated more aggressively than a child with normal hearing.

your poor ds! I don't know much about hearing loss or perforations but I thought a perforation was quite a painful experience so don't understand how this would make his hearing better?

Re ABs, my ds had an ear infection a few months ago with gunk coming out of one ear and the dr immediately prescribed ABs! I guess it just depends on what kind of dr you have!

Can you take him to someone else?

get him to ENT
ds suffered with ear infections for yonks. ended up loosing 80% hearing in on ear.
he always had ear drops(anti biotic ones) or antibiotics orally.

The reason that a perforation might improve hearing is that all the pus is out of his ear. (He has glue ear)

But I suppose that if the ear drum is torn then it won't amplify the vibrations.

My was under ENT, but is now under paediatric audiology. ENT are very keen on grommets, the last time he had grommets they only lasted 8 weeks. The holes where the grommets were oozed pus for 9 months.

After the holes had healed I chose for my son to have hearing aids instead of more grommets. I discharged him from ENT because they were wanting to test his hearing every 3 months and paediatric audiology were wanting to test his hearing every three months. I felt that a hearing test every six weeks was a bit ridiculous.

My son's hearing loss is fairly mild. It is about 30 dB is both ears. (He hears sounds 30 times quieter than someone with normal hearing)
