I went into my local Post Office today, to post an A4 size manual.
An A4 sized padded envelope was too snug for it, so I had to choose the next padded envelope size up and it was considerably bigger.
Not wanting the manual to bang about in the bigger envelope - before writing the address on it and paying for the envelope and postage etc - I folded down the loose edges and approached the counter to kindly ask for a piece of cellotape to stick them down with.
But despite there being a ginormous role of cellotape behind the counter, I was met with a really cold 'Yeah, there you go' and a downward glance to the roles of cellotape for sale on the shop floor.
Essentially, I had to buy a whole role of cellotape just to be able to post my parcel.

Aibu to think there is very little kindness left in this world?

FYI to try to shame my tiny local Post Office for their lack of kindness, when I had paid for everything, I pushed the cellotape through the lady's counter slot and told her to keep it specifically for some somebody else in my position, adding 'because kindness shouldn't be completely dead'.

Lol at the cellotape v sellotape war on this thread.

Sticky Tape in this household- thank you very much 😄

ParsnipAndPoppy · 16/01/2024 05:18

I have done this too!!

I slammed the tape down on the counter and said something very similar in front of a very large queue!

Sadly some people are so tight fisted that if they thought they could get free tape they’d take all their parcels and presents in there to wrap.

i blame them.

They could disincentivise free-tape piss-taking by asking for a small charity donation for a bit of tape. Then people wouldn't feel irked at having to shell out for a whole roll at Post Office prices when they only need a little bit, a charity would benefit, and everyone would be happy.

Except that it's not the cost of the little bit of tape that stops them letting people use it, it's the thought of missing out on profit from selling people entire rolls of sellotape and parcel tape even though they only need a few cm.

When the anthropologists of the future study MN, I feel this thread will be a case study for students.

Sellotape 4eva, though.

Fortheloveofthedog · 16/01/2024 07:10

Yes, this thread is funny but it's easy to take the piss out of anyone in customer service who is doing/asking what they're trained to do and isn't allowed to answer back. Derail over, carry on......

@Fortheloveofthedog Jeez we must go to the same post office. I took a large envelope to post over the counter already stamped up I just wanted to check it was enough for the postage.

There was a tiny white mark on the purple coloured stamp which tbh I hadn't even noticed. This was our conversation.

Man: Has this stamp been used already it's got a mark on it.
Me: No it hasn't its brand new out of husbands wallet.
Man: Mmm not sure it will be accepted at other end they might have to pay for it. Might not accept it.
Me: OK I'm going to have to buy another stamp then as this needs to be sent and your basically saying it won't be accepted.

I did explain in as loud a voice as he used that myself and dh are in our sixties and do you really think we would attempt to reuse a stamp 🙄which was met with a wall of silence from him but a chuckle from the lady along the counter.

This man is such a jobsworth loves to pick up on any little thing. There are people like this in life, just not very kind and almost get a kick out of it.

If that's genuinely the conversation, you were really out of order.

The post office worker was pointing out the person you were sending the package to might be charged, if it wasn't accepted by the sorting office as being a new stamp.

Getting irate with them is unfair.

Fairyliz · 16/01/2024 07:38

I get an inordinate thrill from telling them the wrong thing is in the parcel.
So for example if it’s a top I will tell them (drumroll) it’s a dress!😂

Im a wild rebel who clearly lives a dull life.

Love these posts, where the poster misses the entire previous conversation (and correct information) on a point!

letmeeatinpeace · 16/01/2024 07:48

What would happen if we all bought cellosellotape and left it at the post office for communal use?

Willmafrockfit · 16/01/2024 07:13

Ahem… I think you mean “sticky-back plastic” if you are quoting Blue Peter?

ButterflyBitch · 16/01/2024 07:53

Now I can’t stop saying cellotape as in the instrument as someone suggested upthread and it’s bugging me. You’ve given me a word earworm! 😱

quisensoucie · 16/01/2024 07:54

Glad to be of service!

I don’t need to get a grip. I need them to ask the right and LESS NOSY question. Like they do at airports, for example..

fuckityfuckityfuckfuck · 15/01/2024 19:48

Scotch tape is far superior in the majority of uses.

But brown parcel tape only for post.

Completely agree.

Vallmo47 · 16/01/2024 08:35

Please please stop getting annoyed with minimum waged workers who have been told by management what they can and cannot do or say - I work in pharmacy and people genuinely get offended at things we are told to ask people. I’m just doing my job for crying out loud. No you shouldn’t have to buy the entire roll but bottomline is almost every customer asks for tape and at the end of the day management is petty in almost all businesses. It’s absolutely insane how many people think it’s ok to be rude to us and we just have to accept it. If I had to buy tape one time I’d bear this in mind for future and make sure I don’t ask again. I get to hear the same conversations over and over again from customers and now all I do is say “I’m following orders, it’s not my call”. Businesses are all about meeting targets even when you think it’s petty.

You got your arse out with the counter staff coz you had to use your own Sellotape - Seriously ?.

Stuffing the reel of tape back through the counter screen to the counter staff and parting sarcastic comment is at best childish.

AFreshStart24 · 16/01/2024 09:26

Well the PO's are under a lot of stress atm some even facing criminal charges and jail for something that's not their fault, losing money from their own pockets, they may have been having a bad day and you got the raw end of the stick.
Honestly though I work with hundreds of customers every day and there are some insanely rude people about.

pandyandy2 · 16/01/2024 09:54

@HeraSyndulla But changing the semantics of an OP to 'showed your arse' and 'stuffed' the tape (to prove a point) is v mature.
Oh, the hypocrosy of mumsnet 🤣
