To ask if you drink a lot of water do you actually notice a difference?

I've been making an effort to drink a lot more water. I've been drinking around a litre every day for a couple of weeks.

So far I haven't noticed a difference, just that I need the toilet a lot more which is inconvenient at times! Maybe I need to give it more time to notice any effects.

For those that drink water, how much a day usually & do you feel better for it?

Your body is really good at telling you how much fluid you need.

The idea that a healthy adult needs to drink x amount of water a day according to some blanket rule is nonsense.

If you aren't thirsty and your pee is a pale colour you don't need to drink any more. If you are already adequately hydrated, drinking more won't help you feel less tired or make your skin feel plump. You'll just pee it straight back out.

This. I don't understand the hydration obsession. It's easy to drink enough liquid in a day without caring a water bottle everywhere you go. It's funny how this hydration fad coincided with multiple new ranges of bottled water and water carriers.

It's not good for you to drink excess water, just drink what's necessary. That's about 1.5 - 2 litres a day.

I consume around 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day, and for my age (60), I have good clear skin and feel less tired.
I started this regime about 9 years ago on doctor's advice at the start of the menopause and it's served me well. Prior to this I was drinking less than half of this and feeling constantly fatigued and ratty, especially on hot days.
As others have said, your bladder does adjust to this and frequency of loo visits returns to normal after a few weeks.

YES! I drink 120 Oz a day! There’s definitely a benefit!

It's not even that if you get enough through tea/coffee/juice and whatever food people eat.

It's not healthier to drink more water than your body actually needs. Any excess just goes straight out and taken to extremes causes issues of it's own.

I don't drink any water, I have a large cup of tea in the be morning and a small one at night. I've suffered no ill effects and in my 50s.
I've tried drinking more and I feel no different but I don't sweat so I'm not really losing fluids. Maybe it'll catch up with me I don't know.

You'll be grand, the whole hydration thing is an unscientific myth. Drink if you're thirsty. Elderly people may need an eye kept on them as in their case thirst might not function as well as it should, but that's about it. I know from many previous threads on this subject that people just won't believe this. But hey ho.

I drink between 1.5 and 3 litres of water a day depending on activity and weather.

Dehydration is quite a pronounced bad feeling for me, more so since I had a stroke. Light-headedness, brain fog, crabbiness or headache. So I keep my Emotional Support Water Bottle nearby all day and keep sipping away.

Oldraver · 15/01/2024 18:11

I have to drink 2ltrs due to medication, I don't think I feel any better for it but notice if I haven't been able to keep it up

Sofabum · 15/01/2024 18:12

I have a tiny bladder. When Ibe had to have ultrasounds and they ask you to drink 2 pints, half a pint is enough to put me at bursting point (absolute bursting!) so I don't find drinking water does anything for me apart from make me uncomfortable.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 15/01/2024 18:14

I generally have 3-4 pints a day because once my water bottle is next to me I sip from it without thinking. My skin still looks shit, I'm still fat and i still cant sleep, but my wee is the palest of pale yellows.

lesdeluges · 15/01/2024 18:27

Very little actual water here. Just juice, fizzy vitamins (in water) and plenty of decaf tea and coffee. No pop. I am not dehydrated, always feel well, skin ok, energy fine and rarely thirsty enough to need a glass or bottle of water to satisfy my thirst. OK in Summer and in very hot weather yes, and after a strenous bit of exercise, otherwise no.

I think this drink X litres of water a day myth has been debunked now, and it is not necessary. But if you feel it does you good go for it. I don't so I don't fill my bladder up unnecessarily and spend half my day in the loo or looking for one!.

I drink about 3-4 litres a day and it’s the best thing to help me lose my stomach/bloat. I can drop a dress size in a couple of weeks purely by drinking more water. I have it slightly warm because I find I can drink more that way. I also have a really strong bladder but I don’t know if that’s natural for me or because I’ve been drinking so much for years. It’s best to start the day by drinking a litre before you leave the house and then it’s easy to do the rest of it over the course of the day. I allow myself 1 decaf coffee per day but I don’t drink any other drinks. If anybody asked me what my secret was, it would be this!

Oh yes, many investigations @hashisucks! unfortunately I have some ongoing and long term health issues. It sucks, but that’s life.
