Is this really common everywhere?

Me and DH have both been victims of fraud this week. We both used cash machines (rarely ever use them) and both of us have had money taken out of our accounts in transactions that weren't us.

Does this happen a lot everywhere? How do people who only use cash get their money out?

It's ridiculous and I'm absolutely fuming!

I don't think this is common at all. I use cash for basically all face-to-face transactions and get it out of cash machines, and have never had this.

People who think that Hereyoume is being unrealistic may not have heard that this has already happened in Canada.
The Canadian truckers had their bank accounts frozen when they were protesting, after which donations accounts to the support fund were also frozen.

I thought I might get a few of those replies.

Nothing to do with hats, this is all public information, just look it up.

Agree that it's worrying.

Well said, none of the plans for digital ID/CBDCs etc are hidden, people just think it sounds too far fetched and don’t bother to do any research.

I refuse to use card machines as cloning pins is so common, i don't even use the machine inside our bank, i annoy the gate keepers just inside our branch door by using the tellers that are hidden at the back of the branch out of sight.

Yes, if they have attached something to the front of the machine, it will record your key presses so covering the pad won’t prevent it.

WeeJimmycranky · 15/01/2024 11:15

Sorry quoted wrong post - was answering the q about thieves gaining pins

I've lost more paper cash than I've lost in fraud due to use of online banking/debit cards etc. That's either when I've had my purse stolen or I've accidentally dropped cash out of my pocket.

There are risks either way. At least with banking, you've more chance of the bank refunding the fraud. With cash lost or stolen, you've no chance of recovering it.

I had it happen after using my card in a local petrol station. Reckon they had a skimmer attached to it and a camera. Luckily it was my credit card, not my debit card, so they didn't have access to my money, just my credit limit.

It was actually the bank that spotted it before me, and I had a call a few days later asking if I'd just tried to take out £200 in Malaysia!

On the other hand, I did a cruise that went to 4 different European countries in two weeks, plus the ship's payment was based in the USA. Then, when I got home, I went shopping in my local town centre and it was that transaction that was deemed suspicious enough to freeze my card! They didn't require advance notification that we were going away, but then froze it when I tried to use it 2 miles from my house!

I use my credit card for everything and keep my current account at a minimum, so these scammers can't get much if they are successful at skimming my cards.

Cash wise, I rarely use it. I get some for birthday and Christmas. I then "spend" my Christmas money on my own cards and keep the cash for other things. I actually can't remember the last time I got cash out as this keeps me going all year normally!

Just Google EUCBDC.

literally 100s of articles on it.

Oo, so you’ve done your own ‘research’. Why don’t you award yourself a PhD whilst you’re at it? 😂😂

Your comment makes no sense.

The online articles are too numerous to link, literally hundreds, from sources as varied as Christine herself, to Economists, the Financial Times have written about it.

Just look it up.

We don't have a local bank branch near us where we can draw money out. They were closed down after lockdown which is really annoying

Try using your local Post Office if it's within opening hours

The Financial Times have written an editorial about how someone will "fuck up your life" via your bank account if you post something online about "the state"?

link?

No, they haven't, if you read my comment I have stated that "I" could.

HTH.

Oh apologies.

So the FT have written about how you could fuck up someone's life via their bank account? Confused

It seems to happen all the time near me - you can see the remnants of tampering on the cash machines and there are tons of warnings on local Facebook groups. I only use the cash machine inside a nearby supermarket.
