Baby ill, worried and out of ideas

My 8 month old started with a chesty cough earlier today. He coughed so much he was sick a few times but otherwise fine in himself.
He went down to sleep ok at 7 but woke up a few hours later and I’ve not been able to get him back to sleep.
He has really high temp/fever and doesn’t seem himself. He’s been sick again quite a lot and I’m not sure whether I can give him more calpol, should I wait the full amount of time? Will there be any left in him?

He is screaming if I put him down but also won’t settle on me, he’s squirming to get off me and very restless. I’m at a loss, he’s screaming in pain I’ve never seen him like this before and I’m becoming quite worried although first time mum so could be over anxious.
Would it be safe to try to get him to sleep in his pram? I’m out of ideas and don’t know what else to try

Anothnamechang · 14/01/2024 01:08

Id get him checked over ❤️
Don’t give any additional calpol if he brought the last dose up, it’s not worth the risk. It could be he needs an antibiotic.
Has he had usual amounts of wet nappies during the day? Any diarrhoea?

Onceuponatimeinalandfaraway · 14/01/2024 01:10

If you’re not sure what time he had calpol wait a couple more hours for that. You do need to wait the full amount of time even if he’s been sick.

Have you any baby ibuprofen in? Give him that if so and give him an hour see if it helps. Otherwise Really if he still has a high temp and is seeming in pain even after calpol see if out of hours doctor will let you bring him in, or ring 111. A high temp not responding to calpol needs a doctor.

You could try him in the pram yes, but transfer him to bed before you go to bed as prams are not meant for overnight.

Batnm · 14/01/2024 01:12

Do you have any baby-ibuprofen? You can safely give him a dose of that even if he’s had his full dose of calpol (as long as he isn’t allergic to ibuprofen and you read the label etc).

Batnm · 14/01/2024 01:15

Also there are not many nhs services that will see an unwell baby that young in the middle of the nights. Don’t bother waiting for 111 to call you back, go straight to A and E if you are worried.

ScribeSev · 14/01/2024 01:17

You're not being over anxious at all

Chesty cough

High temp

Vomiting

Seemingly in pain

Restless

These are quite a few symptoms

If you're up to going to A&E then do that

ScribeSev · 14/01/2024 01:19

Oh and screaming

Screaming means he's in pain

He may have coughed back some vomit into his lungs which could hurt and possibly cause pneumonia

JMSA · 14/01/2024 01:20

Hope you're ok, OP, and that you manage to get the help your wee boy needs.
I'm sure it'll all be fine and please keep us posted! SmileFlowers

Chickenkeev · 14/01/2024 01:25

You need to go to hospital. Babies can't tell us what's wrong so they need to see doctors. Had to do it a couple of times and tbh it was all ok but i had no way of knowing at the time so hospital was the best place for us.

User373433 · 14/01/2024 01:27

It wouldn't be rushing to A&E personally, if his breathing is ok. A high temperature usually makes mine vomit, and symptoms sound typically viral for less than 24 hours? Can you get hold of some calprofen/infant neurofen? I would and have put mine in pram to settle when they have been poorly, having them upright helps.

Ozgirl75 · 14/01/2024 02:39

My 11 year old has recently had all the same symptoms and has been able to tell me how awful he feels. He is on a strong antibiotic and was really under the weather. Your child needs a Dr, babies can deteriorate quite quickly.

Badgerandfox227 · 14/01/2024 02:49

I’d get baby seen as well, where I am 111 would be good first option and have had appointments in middle of the night before. Also been sent to A&E for similar as others have posted. Best to get baby seen.

Lookingforbikestorage · 14/01/2024 03:17

Call 111 or just go to A&E. Better to go and it be nothing than not go. Good luck. Hope your little one is on the mend soon.

Lookingforbikestorage · 14/01/2024 03:22

Should also say we have been to A&E for the out of hours GP with our two more times than I care to remember. Every time the Dr have been great and got things sorted. No one has ever said we were overreacting and every time they have been great.

porridgecake · 14/01/2024 03:24

Always get proper advice for a sick child. 111 is your first port of call, that is what it is for.

PeopleAreWeird · 14/01/2024 03:25

@User373433 Please DO NOT tell a poster to not get her baby to A&E

His crying
He wont settle
He has a temperature
He has a chesty cough
Uncomfortable
His vomiting
Not his normal self

These are all signs a small baby should be seen in A&E

OP - You arent wasting anyones time, take your baby to see a dr and keep going back if needed !!!

Mammma91 · 14/01/2024 04:09

I would call 111 for advice as babies generally go down hill very quickly (also perk up like nothings happened!), you’ve done the right thing by monitoring him within the first 24hours, but if he has a high temp accompanied with sickness I’d have him checked over to be sure. How are nappies?

Charliewasfired · 14/01/2024 04:14

These could be signs of some kind of infection which can get serious in a baby quickly. I would go to A & E.

Truebee · 14/01/2024 04:24

we called 111 recently for similar and they said alternate calpol and ibruprofen. staggered.
check he isn't going blue or sucking in his ribs to try and breath.
ibruprofen worked where calpol didn't. he had a rough 10 days with the virus but temperature went after 2 days.
vomiting was from temp and coughing too much.
baby vicks and humidifier in room helped a bit as we as contact sleeping him held.more upright. we had to do this in shifts though so one of us could sleep.
going outside helped stop coughing fits before we got the humidifier. or steamy bathroom.
using a dummy and frequent small sips of milk too.

obviously call 111 yourself go make sure too

Redwineandcake · 14/01/2024 04:25

How high is his temperature? Is he feeding ok/wet nappies?
Get baby ibuprofen - I find it better than Calpol.

Waffle19 · 14/01/2024 04:25

I wouldn’t bother calling 111 but only because I’m our their default advice for babies and young children seems to be to go to A&E, they can’t arrange out of hours appts etc. May be different in your area? If you do call them, baby will have to be awake for you to answer their questions and if they arrange a call back again you will have to wake baby up.

I would honestly just say if you’re worried then go straight to A&E, they are very used to having babies and young children there because as other PPs have said they can’t tell us what’s wrong

Waffle19 · 14/01/2024 04:26

Oh and yes echo ibuprofen, always worked way better for temps here

Ozgirl75 · 14/01/2024 08:23

I’ve only had to take my children to A and E a handful of times. One time I took my small baby as he seemed to be breathless, was crying weirdly and just seemed off. Of course, as soon as we were there he was fine, but the Dr reassured me that “we would prefer to see 100 babies with symptoms that turn out to be nothing, than miss one baby whose symptoms turn out to be something”

When we have a baby, we’re learning all the time about what’s normal and what’s not, so never feel that you can’t seek medical advice for a child.

Even now with my second child, I second guessed myself last week as he had already had antibiotics, but his temp went up again, he was sleeping loads and said he felt pretty bad. Took him back to Dr who said he has a lung infection and needed a stronger antibiotic.

Anyway, hope he’s on the mend soon.
