Make a bowl of cereal and watch tv for an hour…? Is 6 & 4 to young? Because I’m knackered.

Old enough to manage the TV remote ime!!

I had a very early rising DS. I compromised. His little table with some breakfast things put out on it before I went to bed, rather than him in the kitchen. There was a stair gate on the kitchen door and I didn't want him in there unattended.

He was about 4/5 when we started doing that.

Aria2023 · 13/01/2024 18:17

My son was about 7. Old enough to work the TV and get himself some food and something to drink if hungry. Also v. sensible so no worries about leaving the house or using the kettle etc... Would leave him about an hour before checking.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 13/01/2024 18:20

Depends where you too

I used to live in a massive house and would go downstairs with DC . Never left them unsupervised while I lay in.

Now I live in a small apartment. The living room is right next to my bedroom so I can hear what DC getting up to as a doze. So now I let 5 year old get up and watch tv. Doesn’t use the kitchen or ear until I am up though

Beezknees · 13/01/2024 18:20

Around 6 I think. 4 seems a bit young.

Illbebythesea · 13/01/2024 18:22

We live in a house, but not a massive house so they’d be downstairs. They’re both sensible though, I know they wouldn’t go outside or do anything they shouldn’t.

At 6 and 4 mine just got up and watched TV for (up to) an hour, then we made breakfast for them when we got up. They didn't need to eat instantly at that age, when they were younger they would have milk on waking and then breakfast a bit later anyway.

Illbebythesea · 13/01/2024 18:27

They definitely wouldn’t need to eat within the hour, I actually think they’d like the responsibility though!

We left out croissants and pain au choc. Especially for Saturdays so we could both get a lie in!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 13/01/2024 18:28

Probably about two days before they decided sleeping forever was great.

Curlewwoohoo · 13/01/2024 18:30

On the weekend I leave a tablet in my youngest room and he watches things on iplayer for an hour until I wake. I feel a bit conflicted like it's not ideal, but he wakes early and I'm tired! He's happy and we get more sleep, so!

crostini · 13/01/2024 18:33

My 3 year old occasionally goes and looks at books in the next room. We live in a very small flat, I fall back asleep. She usually comes back and falls back to sleep after a while or falls asleep on the setee. She's fairly sensible

strawberryandtomato · 13/01/2024 18:34

5 and 7.
I'm a nicest mum for the extra sleep! They love it

KThnxBye · 13/01/2024 18:35

About 3. I’d be happy for the lie in at 6 and 4

Caszekey · 13/01/2024 18:38

Mine got up this morning without us releasing. DH came down and they were eating magnums out the freezer and watching telly. The 4 year olds fetched the ice cream for the 8 yo.

Autumn1990 · 13/01/2024 18:39

I leave breakfast out for my 3 and 6 year old. Pain au chocolate and fruit and a drink each. I also leave their clothes out. I don’t always get to sleep in but at least I get to browse the internet in peace. They are in the same room as me.

Curlewwoohoo · 13/01/2024 18:42

Brilliant, what team work! @Caszekey

devildeepbluesea · 13/01/2024 18:44

Never! DD is 10 and I’ve pretty
much always woken before her. However, my 6am get-up time is balanced by a 9pm (latest) bedtime and nowadays I’m in bed and asleep long before her!

SnowsFalling · 13/01/2024 18:44

My 2 were just turned 4 and 6. Oldest didn't sleep through, DH was working away (3 months), and I had the most horriffic cold.
I left a carton of OJ and a cereal bar and told them to watch TV on Saturday morning in desperation.
They were dissapointed when they realised I wasn't intending it to be a regular occurrence, so it carried on from there.
I did find DS1 watching TV at 4am, having eaten breakfast a few months later, so some extra reinforcement of "getting out of bed time" was required! But it generally worked well.

AyeRightYeAre · 13/01/2024 18:45

About 4 I think.

Rowgtfc72 · 13/01/2024 18:47
  1. Dd was tall so could reach everything she needed in the kitchen.
Did find her downstairs at 3 once watching Babestation. She commented the lady must be cold in just her underwear. We put parental controls on the TV after that.
11NigelTufnel · 13/01/2024 18:51

I am always up first, so it doesn't happen, buti would think 4 is a bit young to be eating unattended. My 9 year old has been getting his own things like toast and yoghurt from a big pot for a year or so. He has coordination issues, so I am sure most 6 year olds would be able to.

Omg this is hilarious 😂😂😂 Mine are similar ages and I can just imagine it 😂

Dmsandfloatydress · 13/01/2024 18:52

6 about to turn seven. Only because he insisted on a hot breakfast. Just taught him to microwave his Cereal so now we get to lie in until 8am on weekends.
