To feel uneasy about celebrity threads

Those threads that ask if you've ever met a celebrity and what were they like.

There are so many posts where someone says 'I've met xxx and they were really horrible' or ' I once asked xxx for a selfie and they rudely snubbed me' etc.

Absolutely no context is given and we have no idea if the poster was the rude obnoxious one demanding selfies when someone is trying to enjoy dinner in a restaurant with their spouse and children, or approaching a celeb when they're talking on the phone, visiting a relative in hospital or having a business meeting in the corner of a pub.

I have no doubt some celebrities are rude and arrogant, but I equally have no doubt that some members of the public have no manners or consideration as to how or when they approach someone for a photograph, autograph or chat.
I remember someone posting indignantly that they'd approached Pearse Brosnan praying in a church (not long after his wife had died) and he'd had the cheek to ignore them.

AIBU to think it is very unfair of people to post negative stuff about celebs without giving full context?

I don’t understand why people approach famous people when they’re not working. It’s not something I’d ever do.

I get what you are saying but mostly they are just a bit of fun and I doubt anyone takes them seriously, I don't even believe most of the posters.

This.
They're people who are entitled to private lives too.

Not just that. Threads being horrid about how a celebrity looks are just spiteful.

Chickenkeev · 12/01/2024 22:04

It comes with the job. It must be a pain for them, but that's part of the game. Obviously, if you don't like it, don't read/watch it.

HarpyRampant · 12/01/2024 22:06

They’re deeply silly threads. In the 12 years I’ve been on here I’ve seen countless ones, with the same people completely damning Random Celebrity X for having been abrupt to a fan in an airport lounge in 1994.

Some people seem to genuinely not believe they are entitled to private lives.

My mum is terrible for it, if you ever hear about a celebrity making any sort of comment about paparazzi or being swarmed by fans etc she goes on about how they knew what they signed up for and how that's the price they pay to earn the money they do.

To an extent, yes, they need to understand that do lose a degree of privacy but to act like they deserve none is pretty shitty.

I met paul mcgrath (irish and man utd footballer) in Dublin airport when i was 12 . It was the day of the FA cup final and united were in it. My jaw was on the floor. I don't think i said anything. But he was such a dote. Said a few words to me. Pure gent.

No it's not 'part of the game'. If a celebrity tells someone to fuck off when they ask for an autograph at the stage door or at an event they're attending in their official capacity then that is unacceptable.
But so is fans interrupting celebs when they're trying to have a meal with family, or play with their children in the park, or visit a relative in hospital. When said celebrities politely refuse to pose for selfies at that moment you can be sure the rude fan will post on threads saying 'x celeb was really horrible to me when I asked for a photo' or 'Y celeb is an arrogant shit'. Absolutely no context given, just maligning someone well known in public out of spite and annoyance.

I didn't say it was right, but it does come with a cost, especially now. With camera phones etc. Celebrity definitely comes with a cost. Lots of money to be made, but what are you giving up. I can't see it being possible to stop it at this stage. Although some have managed to i suppose.
