To keep my L plates on a bit longer?

I passed by driving test recently (1 minor fault) and have been learning over 2 years with lots of private practice. I am not perfect. I am a new driver. But I am not overly hesitant or nervous.

I have been amazed by the hideous driving behaviour I have experienced since taking off my L plates. People pulling out straight in front of me into very unsafe gaps and making me slam my breaks and cutting me up on lanes. I hadn’t experienced behaviours like this before.

Would I BU to keep my L plates on for another week just whilst I get a bit more used to driving solo? From what I understand the worst that can happen is the police will pull me over, ask for my license and ask me to remove them. There are no points or fines attached to doing this.

I am displaying P plates at the moment but it’s not making a blind bit of difference.

How have you passed your test if you haven't grasped that the rules apply to you. That's why there's so many bad drivers everyone thinks the rules are for 'other people'
You cant use L plates now you've passed your test & driving solo. You need to.stick with the P plates.
If you are nervous then take someone out with you or have more lessons. You can still have lessons after passing your test. I remember doing pass plus (motorway driving etc) years ago.

There’s another plate that you can get I think it’s green with a P that indicates a new driver there’s also stickers that you can put on the back of the car

Somebody didn't read the OP. 👀

Are you driving a small car? People think you have no right to be on the road and will just pull out in front of you in their oversized polluting SUVs.

Can confirm they do this to our truck drivers too. I've just had to review some camera footage where somebody tried to cut in from the straight ahead lane on a roundabout into the right turning lane. Right into the blind spot.

Truck driver pushed them sideways up the road for a good few seconds without realising. 😂 He said he thought the scraping sound was some plastic or something caught in the wheels and was waiting to pull into the layby ahead.

I passed my test 20 years ago but have only just started driving. Just haven't needed too. I kept p plates on for ages. Quite honestly, I think people are WORSE with them on. They undertake/ overtake, beep, it's awful. It's better with them off.

You can try the L ones. But I think it's probably just as bad.

Not RTFT but the only thing is you wouldn't be able to drive alone, as learner drivers aren't allowed to.

SPsmama · 13/01/2024 17:37

IMO the P plates make things worse. Take them off. You've passed your test just like they have, they don't know if you've been driving 5 years or 5 minutes!

StripeyDeckchair · 13/01/2024 17:45

If you use L plates you are driving on a provisional licence and have to have a fully qualified driver with you.

If the police see a driver alone in a car with L plates will they stop it?

Will other drivers give you any leeway if you are alone? Surely they'll assume that you have forgotten to take the plates off after driving with a learner driver.

The real learning to drive happens after you've passed your test when you assume everyone is going to do something wrong and anticipate everything they might do without someone giving you a nudge.
The confidence will come. You just don't have that extra set of eyes any more.
