To worry about radiation from Wi-Fi router

Out router is situated inside a walk in cupboard in dd’s bedroom. I turn it off each night as I worry about it being harmful. DH doesn’t see it as a problem but I would like to get it moved. Aibu?

Yes YABU.
the radiation that a wifi router can emmit is limited in domestic/work/ other settings so that it’s not harmful to humans.

a benefit of turning it off overnight is that you’ll save a bit of electricity though.

It's safe although keeping it in a cupboard is daft because it will impact the signal it sends out. Routers are best placed in the open, higher up and away from obstruction.

Superscientist · 12/01/2024 10:16

Do you have other anxieties like this?

In short, WiFi routers aren't harmful but if you wanted it moving elsewhere I don't see a problem with that.

One thing to bear in mind when turning it off each night is it can reduce your internet speed as turning it off and on regularly is treated as a sign that you are having issues with your line and they can reduce the speed to try to get you a stable connection

Mindymomo · 12/01/2024 10:17

I believe the radiation is very low and has to meet current standards. Can you move it if you are worried.

RedDoughnut · 12/01/2024 10:18

I thought that turning a router on and off regularly impacted the speed of signal?

ManateeFair · 12/01/2024 10:29

YABU. It’s perfectly safe. Your DH is right.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 12/01/2024 10:39

Hahahaha. Blimey, you maybe need a hobby or something if you have time to worry about this - let alone time to ask people about it!!

Aglets · 12/01/2024 10:41

Is safe but why is it in a cupboard in a bedroom. The signal Is far better in an open area.

Constantly turning it off and on is going to mess with the speeds as it can't update etc overnight and can make the connection unstable. You're continually signalling that your internet is being interrupted and can indicate a fault.

Mumoftwo1312 · 12/01/2024 10:41

It's not ionising radiation, it can't cause harm.

Gamma rays (like in radiotherapy), X rays, UV are ionising radiation and can cause cell damage and cancer.

All other forms of radiation, including phone and wifi signals, do not kill cells and do not cause cancer.

Edit for typos

Get rid of it or wrap yourself up in tin foil every time you walk past it.

Seriously, you have nothing to worry about abs if you continue to have these kinds of irrational thoughts, make an appointment with your GP.

Thanks all… I have recently come off sertraline and i know m over thinking everything. We are currently waiting scan and biopsy results for my dh so everything is stressful right now. I will put away the tinfoil x

Following with interest as I have the same worry about DD's room and would like to have it moved. Surprised about all these comments though as any google search would show it is best to switch it off at the very least

This thread is over a year old.

However there was a recent thread by a poster worried about dental x-rays and someone mentioned a website that tells you the amount of exposure of radiation in common activities, eg x-rays, flying in an aeroplane. Flying at high altitude actually exposes you to more radiation than many of the things people generally consider to be a danger.
